"The National Leadership Computing Facility to be housed at ORNL will pool the partnership's computational resources for a sustained capacity of 50 trillion operations per second (50 teraflops) and a peak capacity of more than 250 teraflops."

"Earlier this year, the Center was chosen by DOE to lead a partnership with a goal of building the world's most powerful supercomputer by 2007"

Sounds like a nice little PR stunt. Nice try. Search for BlueGene/L to find a 250 teraflop supercomputer to be unveiled next year and search for the BlueGene/P to find a 1 petaflop supercomputer to be unleashed in 2-3 years.

Re: Back to my original question...

Nice thoughts and all but back to my original question... what kind of computer will do that? I've got all new equipment. One's a fairly highend server. I know this software isn't dual CPU friendly. So what 1 CPU can do that? Or maybe the IBM machines are just confused. Maybe he actually has 20 devices instead of the 1 that is showing under his profile.

cool Re: Back to my original question...

I understand that over on grid.org there are some people using software to pull in multiple Work Units. I have no idea what it is, but if you use that then it would probably be possible to run a multi-processor setup. You might want to snoop around on their forum.

Re: What kind of machine beats SEVEN 2.4Ghz to 3.2Ghz machines?

Marcelle

The real answer to what kind of machine beats seven 2.4ghz + machines is a really lucky one.

WU are completely random in length at the moment (hopefully someone might get a handle on this soon) Some are taking 1 hour 39 minutes and less but my mate has got one currently on 10% after 26 hours on a machine he calls "the Beast" just a tardy 3500+ Athlon 64.

So it's probably luck of the draw instead of some Alien Technology he/she has at his/her disposal (Unless there's a message from ET over at SETI at home)

It all averages out after 5 years of CPU time anyway wink

Keep Crunching

Just to confirm slimasian's points per CPU hour suggests a 2.4Ghz P4 or a 2400+ Athlon

there or thereabouts

I don't think its random at all. It's been this way now for a week. Is he really getting THAT lucky? Also, I don't see how his points & such would lead you to a 2.4Ghz machine. My three 3.0+ Ghz machines don't even come close! The fastest I've gotten so far is just under 10 hours. I don't think his possible 2.4Ghz machine can every day keep up an average of 1.5 hours per WU.

Re: What kind of machine beats SEVEN 2.4Ghz to 3.2Ghz machines?

Hi Marcelle

I'm running an athlon 3200+ and I'm getting 29.06 points per cpu hour
Slimasian is getting 22.3349 points per hour (to be pedantic) so pro rata give or take slimasians pc is running like a 2459.9036476256022023399862353751 MHz PC

which in my book is 2.4Ghz there or thereabouts.

I'm beginning to expect that something is amiss with his/her PC which is running a work unit and then abandoning it due a fault on the PC posting part of a result and going round this loop over and over.

This is usually due to overclocking or a dodgy memory stick or a blocked up heatsink.

Anyway the measure that really counts is points as this reflects the length of time a work unit has taken with a measure of the power of the PC that it took to complete it. We all get bigger and smaller WU's but points are where it's at.

I had a communication with my alien friend yesterday, and he confirmed that the Intergalactic Group is testing a computer on the Grid.
IG is sorry for causing any confusion, and, yes, the computer (actually the new fancy wrist model) is very powerful.

Re: What kind of machine beats SEVEN 2.4Ghz to 3.2Ghz machines?

What is SLOWER ???? AMD or H.A.L. j/k laughing

the Slowest part of a PC [ other than the Keyboard typist or the Cat chased MOUSE ] is the Mechanical[and electro] Disk Drive/ aka Mass storage - in milliseconds! I installed my F@H on a 128 meg [USB] FLASHDRIVE [ can y'all say NANOsec's??]

see ???

join me at TEAM ZeroeZ 5D.value=]MY First STATz[/url]

ps I use to use Virtual RAM drives BUT at $25 / Flash Stick ,,, it's a no brainer [except if the Dog jumps up at the Flash drives blinking light ] biggrin

Re: What kind of machine beats SEVEN 2.4Ghz to 3.2Ghz machines?

I have a MEMBER on my TEAM, same deal, lots of results and no time. Any one of us can do that just by ending the program in task manager. The program will send back the little bit of completed work, and send you a new one. You will look like a HERO with all the results, but have done NOTHING. The real truth is in the cpu time donated, and points that show what you have done with the time.
