Server 2003 compatibility issue?

I have recently installed WCG on my lead server, running Windows 2003, to get aquated with it before adding it to other servers of mine. However, there appears to be an odd problem.

While staryup is normal and appears fine, it claims that it can never connect to the server. This I find odd, because for 18 different times now, it has downloaded an approximately 900K block and done nothing with it. I'm not sure what would be causing this... Any assistance?

The odds are that this is a firewall issue. Check your firwall log and ensure that the blocks are turned off. I forget, at the moment, the name of the tasks that need access but things like UDAgent, Rosetta, and autodock should be allowed.

Someone with a better memory for UD stuff help out on the task names please smile

Re: Server 2003 compatibility issue?

A number of other people are happily using Win2k3 to crunch, both with UD and BOINC.

The most likely cause of this problem is DEP (Data Execution Prevention). It's in Control Panel->System->Advanced->Performance Settings->Data Execution Prevention. Set it to "Essential Windows programs and services only". Not everybody has problems with DEP, but it has been an issue in the past. I think this is because only some computers support hardware DEP.

If you have a multi CPU server, why not consider moving straight over to BOINC and taking full advantage of the computer? This has a number of additional advantages: you can monitor and manage all your computers remotely with BOINC Manager (included) or BOINC View. You can use Group Policy to push it out to all your servers or workstations. It can be installed as a service, so there are no screensavers or icons for anyone to get excited about.

It is most likely DEP. I was running WCG on a Win2k3 server before and once you turn DEP on for essential Windows functions only, it started crunching away without a hitch. :)
