If you are using lower than 5.4.x version of the BOINC client please upgrade. It uses a different port from the earlier versions with less conflicts with other software. The most notable culprit is microsoft.

Yet again having a BOINCMgr.exe freeze, by coincidence saw the latest post of ROM BOINC Client Communication Infrastructure and how the different parts interconnect, he exampled the localhost:10000 port, but confirmed that BOINC communicates on an OS assigned (random) port from the localhost. Running "Netstat -a" in a DOS Window, it will tell which localhost port BOINC 31416 is communicating with. Add this/these port/ports to the exception rules of your firewall, application specific, and u might not encounter again a random freezing of the BOINCMgr.exe window.
----------------------------------------![]() PS, Safety first, u might have enabled all ports allowed to talk to BOINC.exe and BOINCmgr.exe.... I don't, with view of presently unknown ways to break into the system from the internet. On next boot (patch Tuesday in September), will discover if the same localhost port is assigned.

That's not random, it's one of the standard BOINC ports. Don't you recognise the first digits of pi when you see them?!

it will tell which localhost port BOINC 31416 is communicating with. If 1038 is a function of Pi so be it ![]()

I was joking, Sek.
That said, you don't seem to understand how socket interfaces work. Either that or I didn't understand your post (a very real possibility). Anyway, you can't go poking holes in your firewall for randomly assigned outgoing ports. |

Just a random thought. Did you reinstall BOINC 5.4.9 or 5.4.11? The update fixes a problem caused by McAfee, if you remember. It might help here.

Thank 5 and a half of 13, ....long been on the 5.5.xx development versions...now on the OFFICIOUS 5.5.13....some neat little improvements like it telling you what version BOINC servers are on, file de-compression capability, waiting for checkpoint save before project switching, better time reporting and more.
----------------------------------------Meantime, found an answer on a German language DC Forum, redid the specific 127.0.0.1 rule in the firewall and ran some webtests that can be had at e.g. www.grc.com. The three websites tests continue to report me as utterly stealth as far as the web is concerned....that's what matters most and no more hangs and a perceptable improvement of system response. BTW, the localhosts port that talks to 31416 does change more frequent than i had anticipated. .....was one of d-oh moments .... learning every day ciao PS: Fortunately with search engines like Clusty the world is your knowledge oyster......encyclopedia mondiale.....updated every second ![]()

All my computers were graded full stealth by the tests at http://www.grc.com but I don't have firewall software running on any of my machines. Instead I rely on the NAT router all my machines are connected to. With no firewall software on my computers all my ports are open which means I never have problems with a port being closed when I need it open, very convenient. NAT routers are not much more expensive than good firewall software and they can be used with just 1 computer, you don't need to have a LAN.

Thanks for that Dagorath.....Nat and Firewall in the Wifi Router are both permanently on, plus in there, some specific vulnerable ports are pointed at a hoax machine...port forwarding rules....keeps them busy for a few nanoseconds.
----------------------------------------Thing is, software firewalls have the ability of stopping bad internal traffic, should anything still manage to get thru.....cant afford a more configurable wifi router like a Cisco......will have to update router firmware. The new version is said to have more configurability. Finally, Wifi articles suggest crackability in 3 minutes....thus will keep my second line of defense and live with it BTW, Is there difference between Nat routers and Nat able routers? ciao .....fumbles along while seeing that the ADSL has been tweaked to near 19mbIT....1mb to go.
