Here's an odd one I've never seen. Device profiles, Results Status shows that I have a task in progress that BOINC Manager doesn't list. If nothing else, that one will eventually aged out and get sent to a fourth, but is there anything I can do to fix this?

I had one something like that. It was a WU that ended in an error here. BOINC reported it and removed it from its list. Results status page showed that WU as in progress for about 2/3 days following my system reporting on it. Eventually the WU disappeared from results status, no intervention on my part required.

Yea, I'm waiting to see if it "clears up" on its own. However, this is a WU I never received. I have to presume some sort of error with the download maybe? Unfortunately, I don't have the messages, if any, from BOINC Manager that might have occurred. Looks like I didn't notice this one soon enough.

How do you know you never received it? I don't have a log of files received/sent, at least not one I am aware of, but I would like to have such a record. How do you track that?
Also, I just noticed Results Status shows a WU in progress on another of my machines (not the one I mentioned in previous post). The stderrdae.txt in the BOINC home dir shows that WU ended with an unrecoverable error so I obviously received it. It was an hbxxx WU, the series they pulled 4 days ago so that explains why it bombed. However, 6 other hosts errored on that WU too and Results Status shows them as errors but shows me as in progress. I presume they never received my report and it will all get cleared up when the deadline expires. Your "incident" is a little more mysterious/interesting. Is it an hbxxx WU? Has the deadline expired? |

The complete local BOINC log including files send and downloaded is in: stdoutdae.txt. No Hxxx Rosetta errors in my stderrdae.txt ......well its 6.6.6 today
----------------------------------------![]() PS since the BOINC projected completion times are such a 'stab in the dark' to put it very mildly, i have a little spreadsheet with algorythm that computes times within 6 or 7% most often closer and track the points claimed v awarded.....some are a real frowner, per essempio: Quorum: 4.5 hours 133 claimed, 15 hours 53 claimed, me in the middle 7.5 hours, 60 claimed. The last 4 or 5 days i've had many of these wild once. Guess who are not happy )>[

Okay, the WU is faah0583_ d280cb246_ x1hpv_ 01. There is no record of that in stdoutdae.txt in my BOINC directory. There are no files in my BOINC directory or subfolders with that in the name or in the contents. According to Device Manager, Results Status, it was sent to me at 06/05/2006 18:43:33. |

Gremlins. I bet we would see lots of evidence of their handiwork if we watched closely enough. In the end the system seems to recover and heal itself.

Yes, I would expect any "system" that involves any consequential number of separate computers connected via the net only that work together on the same thing to have some number of burps, hiccups, and other sundry emmisions. Still, it would seem that "recovery" in this case is my machine never responds, the WU gets sent to a fourth and crunched. The other two poor saps are stuck waiting for the fourth to complete. However, if a consequential portion of your "fourths" are not the result of users not crunching the WU in time but not crunching it because they never got it, you may stand to gain a good chunk of efficiency by solving the "men-don't-ask-for-directions" aka lost WU problem and not have to change something in terms of your design.

In the case of a host not crunching a WU because it never received the WU there is no duplication of work as there is when a WU gets crunched but misses the deadline. The 2 results pending validation occupy storage space longer than they normally would so there may be a potential for decreasing storage requirements. I wonder how much storage is being wasted due to waiting for results from WUs that were never received? I wonder whether or not it's cheaper and easier to just add a little more storage to cover the waste.

There is a known problem with BOINC servers thinking a task is sent but the client never recieves it. Later versions of the software reduce the chance of this happening. There is also a server side setting that allows tasks to be resent if lost in transmitting. In any case the server software will resend the task to another host once the deadline passes.
