Why do I have NO task being performed?

I've been running the grid on two computers on LAN for 108 days, full time, never off. Yesterday my main computer stopped processing when a task conpleted, and never received a new one. This is now perhaps fourteen hours ago. Second computer working like normal. No internet interruption, no setting changes, no message about task paused...just nothing happening.

A click to try to bring up the graphics gets a message "there are no graphics to view at the moment" but that moment has been many hours long.

Again I state, nothing has been changed on this end or at this computer...no settings altered, nothing added or subtracted, and broadband connection with NET has not been interrupted during this time.

In the help information it says to minimize the grid 'window', then double click on the icon in the system tray, then click ok to restart. Doing that, I get nothing where 'ok' or anything else is clickable.

What's going on, and why is my computer not getting a task?

Re: Why do I have NO task being performed?

You know...sadly...the hyperbole is just that.

I joined this team, hoping that perhaps someone might contact me. Didn't happen. I tried to contact the team...couldn't find a way to get anyone.

Best Supported team on the ... grid. what the heck does that mean, anyway. Didn't work for me.

Re: Why do I have NO task being performed?

Are you running BOINC or UD Manager, as knowing this will help to find a solution for you

And which projects you crunch. There has been a problem recently with a couple of HPF batches for BOINC users.

Re: Why do I have NO task being performed?

Graham...

I assure you that I spent far too much time searching these forum areas trying to find some way to communicate. It has to be the most puzzling and least user-friendly forum set up I've run into, and I've been doing this sort of thing for more than two decades. I spent wasted hours -- literally -- trying to find some email setup, some member contact capability...anything which would let me connect with your group. Given all of the self-contratulations in all of your postings, I assumed that included in being the best group on the grid there might be something to help a new member FIND OUT how to do things. Nada.

Turns out that group support doesn't have much benefit...or if it does, the confusing non-linear message arrangement put it beyond my ability to navigate...and I do this stuff nearly full time.

My own group now -- of one person and two machines -- is cranking out the work pretty respectably. I'm sure the hours and points would have benefitted your own group's PR just a tiny bit...but at some point one stops banging cabeza on the wall and moves on. I could NOT figure out how to be part of your group...so now M Roadsters for Science is making it on its own.

And I did manage to get the problem worked out, so am tasking again nicely.

Hi Vidterry,

How did you solve the problem? Did you find out what caused it?

Re: Why do I have NO task being performed?

Lawrence...

I didn't find out what caused the work stoppage. No clue...but it was a total PAUSE after completed task, and it lasted almost a full day...not quite 24 hours.

The puzzle of course was that the other computer on this LAN continued working on tasks the entire time. That seemed to indicate something specific to my main machine. Everything else was functioning normally...connectivity was fine, nothing had changed in hardwired firewall, nothing new downloaded. Even did a full virus scan...machine clean...but I was getting nothing from the GRID via UD.

I tried a warm restart...made no difference. Finally, as last resort before uninstalling the grid software I did a full cold restart. Upon rebooting, tasking began immediately. Whatever that means to the techies, it has worked since then.

Sekerob, Vidterry is using UD. UD only has a "snooze".

Re: Why reboot is useful

Hello Vidterry,
Last year I ran the Microsoft Update on my main computer after it had been running for 7-10 days. Everything downloaded but then failed during the installation. I did that 3 times in a row, feeling completely frustrated. Then I smartened up and rebooted. Tried again. . . . everything worked flawlessly.

The lesson is that strange states can build up in your computer unnoticed. The reboot puts it into a known good state. The hidden software glitches in the background (caused by ?device drivers, aliens, gremlins?) never do get tracked down and resolved.

But any time I am faced with an irrational event on my computer, a reboot is one of the things I try.
