Re: Christians are giving... come give with us!

Hi all--

As I "'splained" earlier, I am a refugee from grid.org, and joined WCG and this team on Friday night. When I signed up, I installed the UD version (not BOINC) of the agent, and only selected the Cancer Project, not knowing that was inactive at the time. UD Agent immediately started crunching the "genome comparison" project. So I thought that if the selected project was inactive, it would give me something else to crunch. I left my PC on all night, and when I got up in the morning, Agent was inactive. So finally, I figured it out, and selected all projects, and it downloaded a Muscular Dystrophy work unit.
That took about 12 hours, and last night I got another MD w/u (not sure if I got anything in between or not) -- 39% complete.

Wonder what else is inactive besides cancer and the relative time requirements for each of the projects. Is there advantage to running BOINC over UD Agent for a "plain old vanilla" PC (A Dell Dimension 4600 with a Pentium 4 at 2.8 Ghz and 512 MB RAM). Am asking in this thread, since I am a member of the team.

Got 534 points so far.

God Bless--

I was a member of "Team Christians:" and "*Christians against Cancer*"

I also came from the Grid and did the same as you, so I just deleted the UD Version and installed BOINC.

It is a change in how it works, but here we making a change.
By the Glad to see you join with some of the rest of us old team cruncher.

Yes, God sure does Bless, Amen!
May God Bless you and your Family and this Team....Amen!

Re: Christians are giving... come give with us!

Hi Littlepeaks

If it's a single core machine BOINC won't be much of an advantage and the grid is pretty reliable on dishing out the Work Units so the UD Mon capabilities of BOINC don't amount to much.

But the benchmark doesn't run at the end of each work unit there's no delay for uploading and downloading your CPU just switches to the next one so you get a few extra mins of crunching every day and a few more points. The run time measured by BOINC is real CPU time instead of just wall clock and if you have a laptop the throttle that can be applied to the UD agent doesn't work in a nice way on BOINC is kind of one min on one minute off which reminds me (I should use more full stops) the UD agent defaults to just 60% CPU !!!! as a default and if you would like to use all that spare power you will need a little app

I'm off to find that link

http://worldcommunitygrid.org/files/WCGridMaxCPU.exe

That's the link to the file that you want to set the CPU level

Just install BOINC it's just better all round biggrin

You know you want to

Re: Christians are giving... come give with us!

and another thing...... (aka columbo)

You can crunch on your laptop batteries if you so choose on BOINC (it's one of the options in your profile)

Many a happy hour crunching on a Train

UD just goes Idle

Re: Christians are giving... come give with us!

HPF1 and Help Defeat Cancer (which will be back as a phase 2 project sometime soonish) are the only projects finished

The Genome comparisons are fairly quick couple of hours Fighting Aids at Home is Like HPF phase2 around the 10 hour mark on a 3Ghz machine. The Muscular Dystrophy Project has only been ported to the UD agent which might be a good reason to keep them running. I have that one throttled so I'm not too sure how long it should take

Every now and again we get the "Monster" Work Units Day/Day and a half but nothing, after quite a battle at the beginning of this project, in the 2 and 3 week level for some time. IBM are now dab hands at slicing and dicing them up for us biggrin

keep those questions coming

I did have a Community Admin hat for a while but threw it in so that when I 'm Grumpy I can be Grumpy and when I'm Happy I can be Happy and when I'm Sneezy.... wink

Re: Christians are giving... come give with us!

Hiya designwebs thanks for joining the Christian Crunching Crew.

It's been an interesting weekend I hope our Grid.org'ers are feeling loved and wanted. Hopefully you will find it similar but also different in a good way with the feedback we get on our progress and scientists who can be contacted and appreciate our contribution.

It's a good thing going on here

Take care all

Night from the UK

Dave
