Hi every body,
----------------------------------------On the 27th of may at 15:45:25 exactly, i received a WU to process under Boinc. I returned the result the 28th at 20:59:51 after 7,43 hours processing. Then i checked the status of my results, i saw that the WU ( faah0515_ d144cb733_ x1hpv_ 01 ) had been returned "too late" !!!! So i checked the detail of the WU and i could see that this WU has been returned once with error and three times valide. The last member that returned the WU ok returned it the 27th of may at 14:43:19, two minuts before it was sent to me ! That mean that WCG sent me a WU to process two minuts after it was already valid and would any way finish too late. What a waste of time for the research and what a waste points for me. This is not very clever. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by boulmontjj at May 29, 2006 9:23:36 PM] |

Do you mean on the 27th April? Work units expire after 3 weeks. This is normally more than enough time.
Unfortunately, BOINC doesn't have any way of cancelling work units that won't make the deadline. I don't know why not. |

No, i don't mean 27th of april.
----------------------------------------I received the WU the 27th of may (2 days ago) et sent the result yesterday the 28th. The problem is that WCG sent me the WU after 3 members had already sent the result ok. So i crunched a WU that was already validated 2 minuts before WCG sent it to one of my PC's ! Generaly, when i receive a WU, i sent the result the same day or the day after. |

Oh, I see. We have language confusion. My apologies. I thought you meant 743 hours.
Work units are validated soon after they are reported, but not immediately. Looks like just a minor coincidence. Don't worry, the techs are keeping an eye on the average performance, and coincidences like this are probably rare. It is inevitable that work units sometimes get returned after the BOINC system has given up waiting for them. |

It sounds to me as though the 4th work unit had already been placed in the outgoing queu before the 3rd work unit was returned. This is an unusual but not extraordinary event. It would not be worth the trouble to write a program to edit the queu for such an unusual event.

I know that every thing can not be perfect.
----------------------------------------But there should be more parameter that could be check before to declare that the result is "too late". If a WU has been sent to be process less than 2 or 3 days ago, it should be considered as valid. It would be more encouraging for membres. |

hmmm i reread this ...if boulmontjj really had the unit taken in by the server and got marked "Too Late" which is one of the statuses a WU returned can get, then there's something awry, if he'd received on May 27 and returned it on the 28th.....but i suppose extreme optimisation is saught after
---------------------------------------- I can see the order of magnitude increase in WU's being send, received, validated, archiving etc, that different timings in processes can cause a WU to go out just when number 3 came in on the threshold. Factually, i've observed this situation on a Results Status Detail screen.....at one point it says "ready to send", the next minute converted to "Other" 1.1.1970, which is interpreted as "the sending was retracted, but logged for the record". As to cancellation of WU's that already have a quorum of 3, also read some discussion on that. In BOINC there is an button which is Dutch is called "Werk afbreken" (Break off Work) It's below the Suspend button in the "Work" Tab. I've operated it a few times on WU's that had projected 40+ hours and the quorum already established. It causes the WU to jump to 100% and send back and reported as an error. Nothing bad i can see in that, also seeing that WCG is fine and not sending out another copy. Correct me if I'm wrong ![]()
