Just My Opion

I have strongly supported this effort by WCG and IBM even before the launch date of the current project. Then I registered as a member on the launch date. I've tried to help new members as best I could since then. I've completed 37 WU's with the resources I have available. But what has happened in this forum since launch is quite dismal. No moderators, few over-worked tech's who now rarely vist or respond, no updates to Member News or FAQ's since the day of launch. The only update has been to Known Issues when they had a serious problem which caused a hemorage of members.

Reminds me of a childhood ryme that came from our good friends in the UK in the 17th Century:

'Round and 'round the cobbler's bench
The monkey chased the weasel,
The monkey thought 'twas all in fun
Pop! Goes the weasel.

A penny for a spool of thread
A penny for a needle,
That's the way the money goes,
Pop! Goes the weasel.

A half a pound of tupenny rice,
A half a pound of treacle.
Mix it up and make it nice,
Pop! Goes the weasel.

Up and down the London road,
In and out of the Eagle,
That's the way the money goes,
Pop! Goes the weasel.

I've no time to plead and pine,
I've no time to wheedle,
Kiss me quick and then I'm gone
Pop! Goes the weasel.

***

I do not think the sponsors of this project will ever show much interest in the members that do the work

Sadly .... just a weasel. <dataman>

Re: Just My Opinion

well, there appear to be no moderators here, but if there were, I would expect them to advise you that you should continue the discussion in http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=553 instead of starting a new thread, but then again I see you've already posted in that thread. wink

I did not intend to deride Dataman's post, and am surprised it came across that way, sorry for the misunderstanding.

I think in general it is important to consolidate topics, to not duplicate threads, so that information is easier to find and the forums don't get cluttered. I guess I need to specifically state, so that there is no misunderstanding, that I do not in anyway consider dataman's post to be clutter. I was attempting a mild form or irony, responding as moderator might in a thread about the total absence of moderators, and thought I indicated my less that serious intent with the use fo the winking smiley.

Too bad my attempt at humor was interpreted as a personal attack on another member, that was not my intent. However, I will not now consider all possible implications of every word and every nuance of connotation before posting in this forum to prevent offending other members. That's too much trouble, and I hate having to wordsmith every thing so that it can not be misinterpreted by anyone. I do not hold malice, so if anyone every reads that into any of my posts, then they should assume that was not my intent and look for another interpretation.

Re: Just My Opion

You're just running a program! Why do you act like you're actually doing something? Don't you think world community grid employees have better things to do like maybe find cures for diseases than make you feel like your contribution is special? You are processing power and nothing more so don't expect a Christmas card or even a thank you card from them.

cool Re: Just My Opion

Whoops!! Let's keep the heat down in our posts. The problem with bulletin boards is that tone of voice and facial expression are absent, which makes it easy to misinterpret and causes a lot of hurt feelings and flame wars. We are in the early orange-crate days of a new startup. It will take some time before everything is well prepared for the public.

Re: Just My Opion

I am just running a program, or more like I am letting one run on my hardware with my electricity while I am doing something else. Not everyone who is a contributing member is a computer alchemist, or has had experience with this type of distributed computing project, or is all that trusting to load and run software that loads and runs other software. There will be some amount of anxiety, and project staff participation in these forums will help reduce that anxiety to some extent. The goal is to get new members to contribute their processors, and keep current members contributing. Lack of staff involvement will adversely affect recruitment and retention.

I don't need to have anyone say thanks , and I don't need my hand held. For the most part I loaded the software and let it run. I expect the project staff to pay more attention to it than I do. There have been times, such as the multiple unanswered threads about the workunit reset problem, where it seemed like the app was broken and nobody on staff was aware or cared. All it would have taken was a quick "We are looking into it" to keep people calm, but the response from the staff took too long. I was ready to quit, perhaps some people did quit.

I think it would also help if project staff could have some sort of special status title in the forums, more than just "Stranger" or Newbie" so that when they did reply to a post, people could see that they were staff and not just a "stranger".

Re: Just My Opion

Thank you Lawrence and Joatmon ... could be if we just keep telling them and telling them ... they might ... one day ... think it is their idea and support this Forum. I see tonight (today) they updated a read-only section of the forum ... with a scheduled down time. I am impressed <seriously>. Things are looking up.

Thanks and hang in there. Thanks for your continued support in the forum, Lawrence. <dataman>

PS:

Green Force: I already get a Christmas Card from IMB (local office) ... and have for a number of years. Have been close to them over the years.
