I made a post in the "A 3 part Question on BOINC?" thread.
----------------------------------------I think that this question merits a thread of it's own. Why was there not a post in "Known Issues" or especially here in the "Boinc Agent Support" thread about the delays with Boinc validations? I actually had to read a few Team threads to learn about this issue? I have over 28 hours of crunching (like many of you) going back at least two days that have not "recorded" results and what not. I have only been credited with one result this evening. Along with 115 points generated. I do not care about the points. I do care about the "Results Returned". |

From time to time the WCG have adjusted various work unit policies to maximise the amount of research done. None of these changes (not even this one) affect the points you get or the results you return.
There was just a little dip in the daily points when the change was made, but the daily points are caught up now, as validation of older work units account for the gap left by work units that are taking longer to validate. The reason there's no post in Known Issues is because this isn't an issue - it's perfectly intentional. Maybe a more formal announcement would have been better, but the truth is, hardly anyone even noticed. And for those that cared, the explanation was freely available. |

Actually, a thread was started in Suggestions/Feedback under the name Quorum of 3 Change, May 20, 2006. This little bit of news has impacted the community dramatically, certainly i've seen lots of buzz on our DPC Team forum. Claiming that things have returned to normal, well not quite yet, but theory is, it should. For now impact in first 3 days was quite shocking on a Global scale, but BOINC specifically (a guess as UD agent validation will have remained the same):
----------------------------------------Global CPU time comparison against recent production with 4 WU copies: _______________Last Wk ___This Wk ____________ Day____________4WU set___3 WU set__Difference Saturday________115,3 yrs__112.3 yrs__- 3.0 yrs Sunday_________116,0 yrs__103.3 yrs__- 12.7 yrs Monday_________136,3 yrs__131.2 yrs__- 5.1 yrs My guess for the bigger drop on Sunday is, because there were surely still a bunch of 4WU sets out there on Saturday. Sunday the wakeup call, and Monday some catch up, but still no full recovery. My believe thus is, that there will be permanently a very large size, probably 0.5x2 to .75 daysx2 worth of unvalidated results out there. Personally, if this Tuesday is not going to show return to near last weeks production, other, maybe human behavioural effects are impacting. Throwing up a ball, I'd almost believe that if 2 WU's of 3 are returned and near identical, the validation could apply, the third return still to be tested if near enough to other 2 Anyway, i agree with Mr Cool that a Member news notice would be in order, as most everyone reads those announcements.

You have to allow for normal variation. The stats were measurably down on Sunday (as expected), but everything else is well within normal parameters. We would have to wait at least a month before trying to detect any overall change.
Looking at my personal stats, I don't even see a blip in the graph. |

Thanks Didactylos, I suppose we'll wait and see
---------------------------------------- As for blip, what agent do you run? My team dropped close to 25% on day 2 and recovered, but on microscale, nothing should be said, as we have these flushers in the team that 'time' their deliveries ![]() I went from normally 1 or 2 in validation to 4 in validation. This is 15 hours equiv.cpu time, the oldest now 72 hours. In my team all BOINCers report very dramaticl increase in 'backlog' if you can call it that. Having a knack for statistics, do you have numbers, how many find quorum on 1,2,3,4 days etc.....there is the allowed 3 weeks max, and I do occasionally stumble on a WU that really does take a week or 10 days (mostly because i'm doing actually some crunching), but would those 1week+ returns not be the exceptions rather than the rule? have a nice day

Well, the stats (at least for me), are way off the mark. I have over 30 hours of crunching that are still being held up.

I have 2 dual core AMD rigs crunching 24/7 with BOINC. When the grid was sending out 4 WU's, I would normally have 20-25 units pending validation. Now with only 3 being sent out, I have 30-35 units pending validation. So yeah, there will be a few days at the beginning where less results per day are being validated. But it will level out and return to normal soon as far as validations per day go. But it's likely you will have more WU's in your validation que from now on.
----------------------------------------So you will have a small dip in point generation for a few days, but the effect is system wide so your not being left behind, everyone is in the same boat. It's a small price to pay for the potential benefits. In a perfect world this change would result in a 25% boost in efficiency within the grid. In reality it will be smaller than that but still substantial. ![]() |
