It may be that they will cure HIV/AIDS, and it may be that they will never find a cure, but they've already come up with drugs that can take someone from the verge of dying with AIDS to "not detectable", and keeping them that way for 15 or 20 or more years!
That may not be a "cure", but will let you live your life, and save you from a miserable death. Is it worthwhile? MY computer will continue to crunch away! |

Current drugs only extend life. Eventually the drugs build up a toxicity in the body and a person may have to stop taking them for 6-8 months or so at which time the virus can bounce back in huge number like a rubberband effect. Or atleast that is what I have read and heard.
Long term drug use isn't the ultimate answer as it destroys your kidneys, liver, heart, teeth and other vital parts of your body. Drugs bind to more then just their targets and can produce toxic byproducts. Short term hard hitting drugs that cure are a much better answer providing that little to no damage is done. |

Also forgot to mention that antibodies recognize drugs as foriegn substances and try to get rid of them while dosages might have to increase once again causing your body to work harder to get rid of them. The virus can quickly adapt to drugs also if not destroyed quickly.
The end result if a dead lock game that a virus will win. Drugs that treat symptoms only prolong this process. Modern antibiotics are given in high dosages that hit hard right off to advoid drug resistance and kill fast. Antibiotics are NOT effective against a virus tho. |
