Hey all
I've recently joined WCG project in BOINC, but I have a concern and that is, whatever progress or discoveries are made with the results, will they be free to the public? also please show me a link to the source so i can be sure that its not just "empty talk". why I ask this is because too many medecines today are expensive and patented, limiting their usage to a selected group of individuals only. and I'd hate to see this be the case with the results that we all work for... /K |

It's right there in the help pages. All results will be in the public domain.
Remember, though, that none of these projects will actually produce a finished drug. There are many stages of testing and trials between here and there. It is probable that corporations will get involved for those stages, and try to patent what they can. But the more research that is in the public domain, the harder the drug will be to patent - and the easier it will be to create generic drugs later on. We can all benefit by letting the big drugs companies take on the expense and risk of large scale human trials. |

Hello KhaaL,
Adding to what Didactylos said, you can go to Research - Submit a Proposal at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/projects_showcase/viewSubmitAProposal.do and download RFP (Request for Proposal) and RFP Proposal Application. These documents give you the contract terms with the World Community Grid that each project institution has to sign. As you can read for yourself, all our results become public domain. But as Didactylos warns you, this does not mean that anybody using this free information cannot patent anything that he develops. It just means that his patent cannot cover our information, which is available for anyone to use without restriction. Lawrence |
