Choosing.......

Is there a way to actually choose what projects you want to work on and which ones you dont. I want to do more medical research type of projects like medicines and cures. how can you tell what the projects are as you work on them? I am really new to this and though I seem to be up and running, i still dont quite understand which ones do what type of research.

also, the BOINC thing, i have three different companies, predictor@home, rosetta@home, and world community grid. Basically, it does one from each project at a time, where I thought it would just split up the thing between all three of them giving them each 33%.

and last but not least:
Are there other projects out there that you think might be more directed towards my interest as in the medicine and cures besides the ones I am already one?

any help would be greatly appreciate!!!

Re: Choosing.......

Certainly there are ways! It gets a little complicated, though, when you are contributing to so many projects.

First, the reason why only one project runs at once: these science applications are not light weight! The requirements just for a single project are so high that running three at once would make your computer unusable. And that's not helpful, so BOINC runs one at once.

Here's a quick summary:
Predictor@home is doing structure prediction.
Rosetta@home is developing better structure prediction.
WCG has two projects:
Human Proteome Folding is doing structure prediction using Rosetta.
FightAIDS@Home is searching for candidate drug molecules against HIV Protease.

Now, chosing which BOINC projects you want to work on is as simple as attaching or detaching the project. Do it from BOINC Manager, on the "Project" tab. Deciding what weight to give each project is more complicated. You have to go to each project website, and change your BOINC preferences.

If you want to know more about what each project does, then read about them on each project's website. It can get into some pretty heavy science very quickly, though. Start by clicking on the Research button up at the top, to learn more about the World Community Grid projects.

Re: Choosing.......

Hello pogueatl,
This web site trys to keep track of all distributed computer projects, BOINC and non-BOINC: http://distributedcomputing.info/index.html

Click on Active Projects and you will see a column labelled Life Sciences, which lists all the projects that seem to interest you. You can follow the links to their home websites and read about them.

Hope this helps,
Lawrence
