Just dorking around with my Boinc settings, yet again.

Perhaps it is just an anomaly. AT&T was purchased by SBC just recently.

Two weeks ago, I had noticed that whenever I had my *one* Business PC go 24/7, I had DSL "disconnects" when I woke up. Many hours wasted!

Arghhh! Perhaps it was the lightening storms here.

I just changed my Boinc settings to "connect to WCG" every 2.0 days instead of .01 days.

Right now, after I have made that change, I have 6 work-units!

Not sure if this will make a difference, yet, I will tell you if it was worth it. I think it will.

I used to put my LCD monitor in sleep mode. Then the next day, I would find out that my DSL connection was off.

Maybe it was due to the weather conditions (several power outages).

When you see my "devices", you will probably see 7 or more. I wish! biggrin

I have to see how this will work. Hopefully, I will have no more problems with any DSL "disconnects", as I will be crunching offline. Naturally, I will be "updating" work units when I am online.

I had tried using several "Keep Alive" software programs. To no avail.

Anyways, I think that this new "strategy" will work.

Just letting you know ... wink

Re: Just dorking around with my Boinc settings, yet again.

yay, let us know how u go, anything that helps speed the project up is good, i have tried a few of those progs eg ud mon etc, hmm after a while i got sick of them, i guess i was mostly paranoid about missing cutoff dates etc, no i am using boinc which gives the info , nice, (new version btw on my linux and xp boxes).. anyway i am glad u r using the 2 day parameter vs the .1 day etc, might be a good way around dsl failures grrrrr... if e have lightning here i turn all puters off and modem and router... i guess if i know there are outages coming up i might do the same, i have to say that since coming over to wcg after the "other grid" server outages have been way way less of a problem, good work wcg team! my boinc default seems to auto send for a workunit at about 80 or 90% point of current job, my net connection seems to be quite reliable but i will keep your idea in mind, hmm heres a thought, next time i go away for a conference i could do exactly that, build up a small que so that the mrs does not have to worry or do anything, hmm i had also bettr set the boinc options to auto start on bootup in case i am away for a few days, saves hassle for others.. good thoughts, hmm i might even change my settings very slightly just for interest.. cheers

Re: Just dorking around with my Boinc settings, yet again.

Johnny,

Let me see if i'm reading you correctly. It sounds like you were crunching along fine until about 2 weeks ago and then the problems started. It also sounds like maybe you have more than 1 computer on your line, perhaps connected through a router?

If that's the case and if you didn't change your BOINC settings just before the problems started then I would suspect a flaky NIC or cable between your NIC and the router. My "logic" is that if BOINC was working fine and you didn't change any BOINC settings or OS network settings then BOINC should still work fine. If that's the case then try swapping the cable and/or NIC with cable/NIC from another computer. If the problem goes away or shows up on the other computer then that tells you it was the cable/NIC.

Re: Just dorking around with my Boinc settings, yet again.

retep57, very interesting using the Boinc settings to "connect to WCG" every 2.0 days instead of .01 days.
I wished I had kept with the 2.0 days for at least three days. I went back to the .01 days option yesterday and then decided to try the 2.0 days option just minutes ago. The work units were very consistent as far as time goes.
I raced through them. If I were to run my Business PC 24/7, I would definitley use the 2.0 days option. Try it! You can always go back to the .01 days option if you are not pleased.
Dagorath, I have been doing some diagnostics on my NIC and other possible problems. The software tools apps at dsl.com and the usual unplugging, re-plugging, etc. I am starting to suspect my Zyxel Prestige 600 DSL modem.
Zyxel no longer supports this DSL modem. And yes, I should try swapping out my NIC or cable soon.
I am not on a network. Running XP Pro-SP2, all patches up to date.

I doubt that all those critical updates from MS has anything to do with this.

A "work-in-progress" if you will.

Also, I doubt that placing my LCD in "sleep mode" has anything to do with this as well.

You're quite right: if you are having DSL problems, you should contact your DSL provider. Hopefully they will replace your modem or do whatever else it takes to fix the problem. Hopefully. <sarcasm>After all, ISPs have nothing but our best interests at heart, and customer satisfaction is paramount.</sarcasm>

Re: Just dorking around with my Boinc settings, yet again.

Johnny,

If you don't have extra cables and NICS to try the swap test then do the inexpensive test first. Call your ISP's tech department and ask them to test your line. They can test the line right there in their office and the basic test takes about 5 minutes. That's the first thing I do whenever I have disconnect/connect problems. There is a lot that can go wrong with the miles of wire between your modem and their server. Look there first.
