Re: New version of BOINC 5.4.9

I downloaded it and I am running it on my home-pc now. Runs good btw.

Are there also any improvements regarding the performance, I mean, does this version of BOINC have better benchmarks or better crunching performance compared to the previous version?

In that case I should install it on my office machines as well, but that's a lot more work...

Probably not. The benchmarks are a decades old standard, and the actual work is done by the science applications (and WCG do their best to improve the performance of them). Looking at the release log, this release is a collection of minor improvements and minor bug fixes. Sure; upgrade when you have time. But it is probably wise to hold off for a while before doing a wide-scale upgrade, if you have many computers to look after.

If you are just running WCG then there are not that many improvements that would require you to immediately upgrade your computers to the new version, how ever it is good practise when you can get around to it.

Now if you are running SETI, then it would be an idea to upgrade immediately as it works with SETI Enhanced better than previous old versions

Re: New version of BOINC 5.4.9

Have you fixed the install that went pear-shaped yet?
Remember to stop and exit BOINC completely, first. If the uninstall

short version, yes thanx , new boinc on both xp machines pentiums.
also new boinc on linux dual core amd . yay.

i am not sure why it went pear shaped , i am suspecting a corrutped installer d/l.... i did everything 100% right the 1st time i am sure, it refused to progress looking for an msi file, actually i found a boinc msi file in windows/downloaded installtions directory but it did not like it..

i tried to install about 1/2 a dozen times with no joy. then out of desperation tried to uninstall, then guess what ? it tried to unistall but wanted the msi file arghhhhhh.. then tried to unistall a bunch of times still no joy, then hunted around other forums.. no help.

then i tried some bizare things, i trued to install while boinc still running, now that was dense - oh well nuthin to lose.. again no joy.

then i thought if new boinc wont work i try to go back to old boinc, hmm when is was installing it gave me a "repair" option, hmm that suggested to me it found somethng wrong, so installed easily, in fact so smooth and easy that i thought again, hmmm go for he new boinc over the top of the old one

yay success.. :)
so then 2 minutes to update the 2nd xp box , and a bit longer to update the linux box, i forgot how to install stuff, not interested n linux, just want it to work! just had to paste "sh and the file details" simple after all ! thanx for your support, always interstng to know there is support out there, i knew there was a fix one way or another, i am still curious as to wot went wrong.. ces't la vie

Re: New version of BOINC 5.4.9

Curious. Isn't an msi file something that is used when you pick one of the other install type options other than single user? If your existing BOINC was installed under the single user option and you accidentally clicked on one of the other options, it might have been looking for this file when you wouldn't have one, that you used before at least. I'm probably wrong but can't help but wonder.

Re: New version of BOINC 5.4.9

keithhenry, yes you're wrong :-) MSI stands for Microsoft Installer Database, and is the way nearly all installations are done now on Windows. The executable you download just extracts the BOINC.msi file, and runs it using msiexec.exe.

retep, I tested installing the new version while BOINC was still running, and the installer managed to correctly shut down the running process and upgrade cleanly. You must have been unlucky. By the way, most installers have a "repair" option. It shows up if you run the installer with the product already installed. The fact that it solved your problem pretty much proves that your old installation had got damaged.

goodo, yes i am convinced that the old boinc got damaged somehow, i was annoying that the repair option did not show up at that time, so annoying if a prog wont let u uninstall grrr, after being caught in an endless loop situation ie cant install new cant uninstall old then i started to pull my hair out arghh. the i manualy removed the boinc folder but it still would not let me install so then fianlly when i re-installed the old version everything started to be cured, the good old repair option came up, yay and easy install, then i did the new one over the top just as easy, i am only posting this toto let others know of a rare ( hopefully) problem and how i got out of it.. doh most annying thing was the dumping of 2 work/units, silly me, 6hrs or moe down the toilet, ces't la vie... cheers all is well

Re: New version of BOINC 5.4.9

Hello, all.
I've just installled this new version on Ubuntu. It asks me to log in using "localhost" as a host server. It doesn't mention a password, so I leave it blank.. When I do this, it tells me "The password you provided is incorrect. Please try again."
It ran for about 10 minutes last night when I first set it up.
Has anybody run across this problem?

Thanks in advance.

McGee

Edit: Now it lets me use "localhost" as a host server, but it can't connect to the server. That's progress, anyway.

Re: New version of BOINC 5.4.9

have you attatched to project?
i used old boinc on ubuntu worked fine
i am on a dually amd so default was single core but from ubuntu forums i got info to quickly fix this, i wonder if it is the old ubuntu super user regular user thing, hmm i did not have ( still dont have) an auto start thing setup, i just go to the boinc folder and click boinc manager... hmm keep us informed, there is always a way, btw i switched to suse 10 but that was only cos a found more 64bit stuff there :) cheers ubuntu worked well , actually i still have it installed on a spare hdisk, i could try to set it up again to figure out wot u r doing but i suspect uknow more aobut linux than me cos i know almost nuthin, my suse up date constisted of d/l new boinc, then i forgot how to install stuff doh, i went to boinc forum and copied a scritp ie sh balh blah file and it just took over from where the old prog was,

is this a fresh install or new over old?,
i put the new in exact same place as old so as to not duplicatre stuff but write over old/refresh. i not much help but i can tell u i have new boinc working nicely on linux :)
