On installing WCGA to my drive (and once it has got some data) I have the following folders:
----------------------------------------1. The install folder that holds all the other files and sub-folders. 2. Another folder (mine currently) titled 'ud_5235301_0.dir'. Am I correct in thinking that the root folder holds the working program files - and only those files - and the sub-folder (i.e. ud_5235301_0.dir) holds only the data that is being worked on? If this is not the case would someone please explain what the contents of the folders are? Thanks. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Apr 27, 2006 8:59:37 PM] |

Correct, MeToo.
The subdirectory is created for the work unit that you are running. If you only run FightAIDS@Home, then you never have to download a new copy of the AutoDock program, just the work unit, which saves communication bandwidth. Lawrence |

Thanks Lawrence
Some more questions on the files: 1. I take it that the subfolder data files are the files that are continually being updated as the agent processes the data. 2. Does that mean that the only place on disk that amended files are being written to is into the subfolder? 3. If '2' is correct wouldn't it make things a bit faster if the subfolder was located in a ramdisk for faster read/write times? (I'm assuming that there wouldn't be a point in putting the root folder in a ramdisk as well, as the contents of that are launched as a functional program into RAM anyway (or not?).) This would also address issues raised in the forum about the agent continually writing to disk, which some people have expressed concerns about. |

1. No. The files will only be modified when a checkpoint is reached. Some of the science applications checkpoint very frequently, others less frequently.
2. No. UD updates some of the state files in it's own folder as well. 3. See (1). It really wouldn't give a measurable performance increase. Your memory is more valuable being used normally. Don't use a ramdisk. |
