Minimum system requirements for running 2 workunits

Hi all,

I was wondering what the minimum system requirements are for running 2 workunits at the same time on a HT machine. I have some HT machines and they all have at least 512 MB RAM. The "official" system requirements are 250MB for doing 1 workunit.
I assume this means 500MB for doing 2 workunits at the same time.

Will letting BOINC crunch 2 workunits at the same time slow down the computer a lot because of the lack of memory?
The PC's are in a network environment. MS Outlook / Word / Excel are the programs used most of the time.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Minimum system requirements for running 2 workunits

Hello depriens,
The minimum requirements are what the server checks for. Once met, you can do whatever you want. The working set of pages for FAAH is less than 100 MB although total Virtual Memory is close to 300 MB. HPF uses a much smaller working set, maybe about 35 MB.

So how much memory does it take to run Word, etc, as well as WCG without a lot of paging in Windows XP? My estimate is 256 MB for HPF and 384 MB for FAAH. For that matter, I would think that 384 MB could handle two HPF threads or 1 HPF and 1 FAAH thread without undue paging. 512 MB should handle 2 FAAH threads with lots of room left for other applications.

Future projects may make FightAIDS@Home seem like a small, compact program. Personally, I would not run 2 threads on a hyperthreading processor, but that is a matter of individual taste. Hyperthreading allows one distributed computing thread to run in the background while maintaining fast user response as long as memory is not too full.

This is why I haven't done this yet. So you are saying that the upcoming projects will be more complex rather than simpler. Perhaps I should leave it as it is right now. Now have BOINC set up to use 1 processor at a time. I'd like to keep taking part in all projects if possible.

Re: Minimum system requirements for running 2 workunits

Hi depriens,
That was almost a throw away line I tossed in. I do not know what HPF2 will require. But over at Rosetta@home the requirements are a lot stiffer than FightAIDS@Home, so I am guessing that HPF2 will use a large program. Until I know, I am cautious about trying to get the most out of Pentium 4 cpus with hyperthreading. 2 gigantic threads might run into memory constraints or start thrashing the cache.
