How about porting the graphics from the UD client into the BOINC client? That way those of us using BOINC will get nice graphics to look at too!

Graphics are nothing more then psychological "eye candy" and feel good therapy if you ask me. I am myself happy with just seeing a percentage sign and some other information to let me know work is being done and how much. I would never want graphics if it would take CPU cycles away from the main project calculations on a noticable scale. In addition I think graphics are less professional for deployment on networks.
This is just my opinion tho. I didn't understand the graphics on the original client anyway and I'm happier with BOINC. |

One important thing that we must consider is that publically distributed computation projects "pay" the computational power they get by giving:
1) credit to their users, which makes them proud 2) a good, interesting screensaver By realizing also a screensaver, we can augment noticeably the number of people who adhere to the project. This would be very important for computing purposes, because the real strength is the number of clients, not their power. The boinc channel (also for windows!) is a very huge resource of subscribers, why not support it fully also we graphics. So I'm asking a question: when WCG introduce graphics also for the boinc client ? |

Just for info - a few months back there was a post (I think by knreed) that said that the WCG intended to develop graphics for BOINC, but had it on low priority, so it would not show up in the current projects.

We are working on getting graphics ready for the BOINC clients.
----------------------------------------As for people who don't want them, that's fine. You don't have to view them, just like in UD. If they're not being displayed, you're not paying for them, in terms of CPU and RAM.

I full well realize that graphics are nothing more than eye candy, and that they take some processing power away from the calculations. However, I like graphics because they give me some insight into what the computer is doing, over and above knowing that "work is being done," which I know anyway because BOINC is running. I have some knowledge with regards to Biochemistry and I want to see what exactly the computer is modeling, how close this is to any previously determined structures, what the molecules look like and a lot of other things. Secondly, this is a network of volunteered computers, not a professional cluster/grid. Third, part of the point of these projects is to educate the volunteers about the projects methods and goals, graphics are an essential element of that education. Thank you for letting me know that my graphics are on the way Mr. Alther. [Edit 1 times, last edit by darknightcl at Apr 19, 2006 12:09:08 AM] |
