Where are the required URLs?

Wanting to participate, I downloaded and installed the BOINC software. During that process, I am asked to enter the URL of any project(s) in which I would like to participate, but when I follow the URL presented (http://boinc.berkley.edu) during installation, and even after looking around the site, I cannot find anything that states, "These are the URLs for which you are looking."

Might someone think that is important enough to make the requisite URLs absolutely impossible to miss? (Clearly there are no honest-to-goodness marketers involved with this at all. I smell the steak, but where is the sizzle?) Might it not be most wise to have that URL presented during the software's installation point directly and unquestionably to the project URLs? Answer: Yes. And to make it even worse, I just looked at the help page and the acronym URL isn't even on the page. confused Where to go? I do not know.

Outcome: BOINC uninstalled. sad
Solution: Find a marketing expert/manager to assist the geeks and scientists. wink

Re: Where are the required URLs?

Hello ZenWarrior,
Good point.
This information is given in the 'Information about BOINC' thread, the first thread in 'Start Here' at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=4925
The BOINC Account Key for a member can be found by clicking 'My Grid' - 'My Profile'. This should show:
BOINC Account Key:
BOINC Project URL: www.worldcommunitygrid.org
BOINC Account Number:
BOINC Cross-Project Id:

If NO Account Key is listed (yes, this can happen)
then click on http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/viewMyProfile.do?regBoinc=true
to register with BOINC and be assigned an Account Key.

We need to add something about this to the download page at http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/viewJoinNow.do

I will drop a note to the WCG staff referring them to this thread.

Re: Where are the required URLs?

ZenWarrior,

Thanks for your input. As far as the World Community Grid site goes, we have been careful to make sure that the Project URL is listed with the Account Key in every instance. Since both of these are required to run the project, it is important to have them together.

Perhaps after installing, you closed the browser window, or navigated away from the page we display with instructions on how to install the BOINC client. On that page, the Account Key and Project URL are display (I feel) quite prominently.

That said, we are working to make the registration/download/install process as simple as possible. This will include changes to the web site, as well as upgrading to newer versions of the BOINC client as the become available.

Thanks again for your input, and please know that we are aware the process can be made simpler and are working to do so.
