Thanks for the help.
----------------------------------------I guess the bearings are getting worse, since I *think* the system drive makes slightly more noise then the other drives. MTBF is probably lower, but this has been going on for at least the last year, so I still hope it will last a bit longer. Can someone help me out with making an image of the drive and put it on my secondary drive so I can try running that one as the system drive (and see what it does). If the bad one still runs hot I'll replace it with a new one. What's the way to go? I heard about a program called Ghost? ![]() ![]() |

There are programs such as DriveCopy, but rather than buying a program, I would simply take my computer in to a computer shop and pay for some bench time. Have the shop switch out the drive and copy it to the new hard drive. It is very cheap and much easier than wrestling with a program you only intend to use once. I stopped doing things myself when they started selling 1 GB hard drives. There is a lot of competition in the PC hardware field and prices for installing hard drives are very low.

You mean "bearings", and you are almost certainly correct. Without any load, your power saving software should spin the drive down, so that won't prove anything. Drives can run hot without any trouble, but the MTBF will be significantly lowered. If the bearings are failing, the problem will get progressively worse. Monitor it closely. Well, even after 16 years in US I still misspell words. Oh, well ... I used norton ghost to copy drives in the past, but I like older version of ghost (pre-version 9.0). There are plenty of other programs on the market. But I do recomend to go to local computer shop and let them do it for you. |

I'm thinking of doing a 'fresh' windows installation on the other drive. This installation is already over 3 years old and I think over a hundred or so programs have been installed and un-installed, so it's a lot slower than how it used to be.
----------------------------------------Only thing I hate is that I have to re-install everything! ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I hope the temperature issue will be over soon, I just bought the following:
----------------------------------------- Maxtor Diamondmax 10 300GB Hard disk - Zalman CNPS7000B-CU 92mm cooler (I don't have room for a bigger one) - Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste - 2x Zalman ZM-F1 case fan 80mm This should do the trick I guess ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by depriens at Mar 23, 2006 8:25:17 PM] |

I hate Maxtor drives. I would much rather have Samsung or Seagate. Well, since it's only for storage Maxtor has the most GB's for the money... ![]() ![]() |
