Hi there, I'm a BOINC user for approx 1 year, running WCG for around 1 month. In the past week I have now aborted 3 WCG work units for appearing "frozen" at a percentage progress. Normally the machine it's running on takes around 5 hours to do one work unit, but I am now noticing an apparent "hanging" at certain percentage progress points.
For example, I thought I had a "hanging" workunit for rosetta4.22, es956_33_3, but it could be something to do with apparent arbitrary updating of progress percentages. After sitting on 0.68% from around 1.5 mins, it then jumped to 1.36% complete at just after 10 min. Could someone please explain the way that WCG increments the progress information, as I am used to Einstein, Climate, Predictor and Seti showing completion as it occurs. I'm now nervous that I have aborted 2 previous work units that were still actually being analysed.... Running a PC with Windows XP home edition. cheers in advance |

I have been running WCG on BOINC for some time and have not had to abort any WU's, although the same cannot be said of Rosetta@Home. I find the projects with the longer WU's (like WCG) sometimes take a little while between showing the progress update - this isn't a problem though.

Could someone please explain the way that WCG increments the progress information... The progress information is a combination of "known" completeness and "estimated" completeness. We know how many folds each workunit needs to complete and we know when a fold is completed. That's the "known" part. The "estimated" part is due to the fact that the workunit is stochastic - i.e. it's not deterministic. We can't know in advance how long an individual fold will take. However, we can make an educated guess as to how long it will take and we increment the progress based on that guess. Occasionally, the guess is a bit off due to the specific nature of the workunit and the percentage will appear "stuck" for a while. We learn as the workunit progresses, so it's most noticable at the beginning of the workunit than in the middle or end. We do this estimated progress because otherwise the percentage would only increment when a fold completes, which may take a long time. This delay in progress complete reporting would cause even more confusion than the current method. The percent complete would also jump in chunks rather than smoothly as it does now. As long as the graphics are updating and the process is taking up CPU, it's running. We've never seen a workunit get "stuck" in either HPF or FA@H.

Thanks for responding, now I just feel bad about abandoning two WUs that were okay. :(
I will happily continue on with my little contribution and promise not to be so trigger happy in the future. |

Having a blonde moment tonight... and can't locate an "edit post" feature. I didn't realise WCG had graphics, the graphics button thingie in BOINC appears greyed out, and I don't use the screensaver when the pc is not in use - trying to save power :)
I'm running BOINC 5.2.13 on a clone PC with Windows XP home and 3.2 Gb chip with 1Gb RAM. Darn it if I'm missing out on seeing nice graphics - it's a girly thing :) |

The 'Edit post' button is top left of the post itself, but to the right of your name.
There aren't any WCG graphics in the BOINC client. WCG are still fairly new to BOINC and it may be that at some point in the future they implement it. Don't worry about 'blonde' moments - I have them all the time, although I think it's more to do with my grey hairs ![]() ![]() |
