Completely agree.....no interest whatsoever if the cancer data to crunch comes from the same science group that is supplying Grid.org, or is managed the way grid.org did/does. Worst being the regurgitation of the same data over and over again, since they had no new datasets to offer and finally the lack of reliability....never will i touch that organisation again.
----------------------------------------If cancer does come to WCG, i'll add it to my profile. Please let me/us manage that, as at grid.org they made people volunteer for something they did not sign up for in multiple ways. As for BOINC, whilst it crunches, seemingly, much more efficient, it is still a little but too involved......need for getting it a level of ease of installation like the ud agent....install and forget. Conflicts with other software.....in the end, once the knowhow was acquired, very little was needed to make it 100% cooperative with anything there. No aps had to be changed out. Have a nice day

You can always opt of of any project, but remember that new projects will be included in your profile by default.
WCG may be persuaded to revisit this policy for the benefit of "single issue" crunchers - but on the whole, this policy means that the WCG community can happily continue to crunch while projects come and go. |

When it happens, will the server system know which machines can handle Cancer......suppose so, since the profiles carry technical data.
----------------------------------------If people have selected in their default profile to unselect one or the other, i know a few that do FAAH only, others Rosetta exclusively, it should be bright enough not to add Cancer by default.....enough a simple script (a layman's view) ![]() The fishing rod is in the car....i'm going after Stizostedion Lucioperca up north ![]()

What a script can't figure out, is did the person deselect one project because they didn't want to work on that particular project, or because they wanted to work exclusively on the other project?
My suggestion is to provide an additional setting: include me in future projects (default) or email me about new projects and let me decide (with a link to the preferences page). |

Perhaps we will see work units for Cancer, Diabetes and other diseases here soon.
----------------------------------------Soon ... a word that can be misleading. "Time" means different things to many people. |

Hi Johnny Cool,
We should have Cancer running sometime 'soon' after HPF2 goes live. It is hard to be precise in scheduling because there are 2 parties to each project. Normally, we are the only experienced party so we have to be patient with the institution struggling to start up a new type of project. Lawrence |

Cancer is another great target, i dont say the greatest. Whilst Cancer is the second largest killer "in the rich western world", there has to be life before that, so helping to find an answer thru hpf and aids (a much greater threat to humanity) is going to improve quality of life for many more. Also, adding a 3rd project and Force it upon present crunchers in the existing default profile is going to spread resources and will cause FAAH and HPF to go to slow motion, lest there is counting on accilerated growth with Cancer being added.....what's the contract saying with the FAAH and HPF science labs on that?
----------------------------------------Will there be enough 'technical' support to run a third project? I'm sure many came across from Grid.org because of Grid.org's absolutely dismal attitude and failure in keeping it running, so by all means, but make it eclectic rather than force fed. I looked at the stats and present share of HPF and FAAH which are 45 and 90 years per day respectively, so please respect peoples choices, make it opt in rather than opt out.

Hi Sekerob,
Currently, the policy that WCG uses is to reset everybody's profile to default when a new project goes live. Then you can select which projects to run and which to skip. We do not know how many of our members are paying attention to what their client is running. Certainly, many never post in the Forum. We do try to send out a newsletter announcing the new project, in order to alert our members that a change has occurred. As for technical support, we are running 4 platforms (UD Windows, BOINC Windows, BOINC Linux x86, BOINC Mac OS X PPC) and will soon add BOINC Mac OS X x86. Times the number of projects. We will handle that by staggering the introduction on new platforms. It is an important consideration, but not a show-stopper. I do wish the BOINC proxy server bug in 5.4.9 would get fixed and that a standard compression subroutine would be added to BOINC, but at least we have the 'retain in memory' bug fixed. Maybe we can get a snazzy screensaver for BOINC for Cancer, to help attract new crunchers, but if something has to be delayed, the eye candy seems appropriate. New projects always have the potential for serious bugs that waste weeks of crunching, so we will want to have alternatives up and running in case we have to suddenly pull a new project for fixes. It is just prudent management to try to run several projects at once, despite the strain. But we shall be careful not to over-commit. At least, I hope so. ![]() Lawrence |
