Newbie Questions - TIA

I recently signed up to supprt the WCG FIGHTAIDS@HOME project.

I am running the UD client on Windows Advanced Server 2000 on a dual CPU Poweredge 4400. I (probably foolishly installed the software on my C: partition which is space limited. My F: partition has 300+GB free. Should I uninstall/reinstall to improve performance or is there a way to use the tell UD to use the F: partition? It is a dual Zeon with 4 GB RAM. That said it appears to only be using 50% of 1 CPU and my device shows an overall performance of 133 versus the 100 High-End Desktop System.

Constructive suggestions welcome.

On a second note I also have 15 PIII servers I could run this on. Unfortunately they are only 256 MB RAM and 18GB HD so I don;t know if it is even worth the effort to put an OS on them and let them crank?

TIA - send email directly

Al

Hi ahoover

Not quite the right forum for this question - this one is for general chit chat.

Nevertheless I would suggest that you install the BOINC Client instead of UD as the BOINC Client will be able to crunch on all of the CPU's in your system (Unfortunately the UD Client is single threaded - the 50% is down to Intels HT Technology, there's lots on the forum on this subject )

You can also install BOINC as a service (officially supported) and the crunching on your server would be effectively invisible (apart from the extra heat given off by those Zeons)

As a side benefit the BOINC Client also crunches FAAH work Units on a lower spec'ed machine than that specified by UD

15 P111 servers added to this great project would be worth the effort

I wish you all the best with your crunching and welcome aboard

Dave

I think what David means is that you are probably more likely to find answers to technical questions on the technical support boards: either "UD Windows Agent Support:" or "BOINC Agent Support", both of which can be found under "Member Board". Naturally, people can post anything they want in a general chat room, so long as it's kid friendly here and isn't spam.

Welcome to WCG.

Suggest you load linux as the os (unless you have plenty spare windows licences) and run the BOINC client. 256MB is plenty good enough for running FAAH in a BOINC/Linux environment (just make sure that you also format and activate a swap partition) and 18 GB is more than you'll ever need for a cruncher.
