when should I quit ?

hi,

I might have to quit. sad

I guess I should wait until my task is completed ? (my first one, "primary task")

Or maybe completing a "primary task" without crunching anything else is just useless ? (why is it called "primary" ?)

Or maybe I could quit right now ? (but I won't if my crunching would be lost)

thanks !

Re: when should I quit ?

"Primary task" means the current task. It's a poor choice of words, but what can you do?

Each work unit is as important as the next. Try not to quit with one almost done, because it would be lost. Best not to quit at all. What makes you think it is necessary?

Re: when should I quit ?

I'm considering to move to Rosetta@home (looks like it's more effective to crunch this first, long-term (?) )

But my computer isn't a very fast one so I think I should crunch in only one grid.

what do you think ?

(thanks for answers)

Re: when should I quit ?

hmmm....

seems Rosetta is too demanding for my computer... problem solved ! I'll stay hugs !

btw, don't you think it's more effective to crunch Rosetta first (if you can...) ? since getting a better Rosetta software accelerates HPF ?

? d oh ?

Re: when should I quit ?

Hopefully I can give some useful input here:

Rosetta is the software that is used by the Human Proteome Project here on World Community Grid. The Rosetta project is mostly testing and developing that software. World Community Grid uses stable, tested versions of Rosetta to produce practical results.

Rosetta will be an ongoing project, as they need to add new features and more detailed modelling. As Rosetta develops, more advanced studies will be possible. For example, the second phase of the Human Proteome Project will be modelling at much higher resolution than the first phase.

We are (in an unoriginal turn of phrase) standing on the shoulders of giants. The work we are doing now must be done before we can move on and do more advanced work.

In conclusion: if you feel you must switch to Rosetta, that is your decision. But we need the main force of our computing focussed on the practical applications - and I'm sure you will agree that the World Community Grid philosophy is the most open and humanitarian going.

Re: when should I quit ?

Thanks for the big answer !

"The work we are doing now must be done before we can move on and do more advanced work." => I thought we could do what we are doing now faster with a better Rosetta... d oh (i've read something like that, but i'm not sure... looks like you know a lot more)

Anyway, as far as i'm concerned, no choice. (not enough RAM). i'll stay. smile

Re: when should I quit ?

I wish R@H the best as well but WCG is more reliable/stable and now that WCG is on the BOINC I can come back and resume crunching WCG with E@H etc. The best of both worlds IMHO biggrin ......Cheers, Rog.
