Re: ThreadMaster successful stories

Had Threadmaster installation for a while in my list of ToDo's and did so this morning. After some toying and reading some fora threads from other sites e.g. BOINC questions (multi-threading, PC usage...), essentially its deadsimple.

1. Download latest version...have 1.12 from official BOINC Add On Software
2. Unzip to a sub dir of BOINC (but you can put it anywhere).
3. Run the install.cmd which will set up your registry.
4. Start Up Registry Editor (Regedit or Regedt32)
5. Goto key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ThreadMaster\Parameters\Applications
6. Create new string keys in right frame for:

wcg_faah_autodock_5.09_windows_intelx86
wcg_hpf2_rosetta_5.07_windows_intelx86
wcg_hdc_tma_5.05_windows_intelx86 (added 7.23.06)
rosetta_4.22_windows_intelx86

latter key in case WCG ever sends out hpf1 units again. Also every time a new version comes out, the key needs to be added or renamed....e.g. rosetta 5.07 could get upgraded to 5.08 etc.

7. Set value for point 6. keys to percent required. (i've got 95 same as what i had it for UD agent)

You'd get something like this in your registry:

BOINC has to be restarted for the settings to get read!

Permanent CPU utilisation now 95%.....you still get 100 if other apps require more oompf.

Reference: Threadmaster Home Page

WAIVER: Entering the Registry and making changes can render your machine useless. Make a system restore point first, so you can go back!

Re: ThreadMaster successful stories

After some further experimenting have BOINC & UD agents running side by side on my HT CPU. 80% to BOINC with a FAAH finished in 6.75 hours, 15% to UD, without using the throttle util for the UD agent provided by WCG. Threadmaster is a marvel....positively notice no lack on the front apps and only took 6 second of CPU time in a 48 hour period since kick-off. The Idle Task only clocking up 20 minutes since Boot, 95 hours ago....zero disktrashing....overall CPU util rarely over 95%....happy as a clam.

Did this for the 'heck' of it.....be careful with words as the other might get censored.

Every time WCG adds a new project, you will have to add a new science application key, see point 6. Each time you have to restart the Threadmaster service for it to read the new addition(s)....simple rerun install.cmd

Permanent CPU utilisation now 95%.....you still get 100 if other apps require more oompf.

"deadsimple"??? You're kidding, right? laughing

Re: ThreadMaster successful stories

Well, over 120 hours on the Threadmaster diet, alls well. Have explored new frontiers, or reinvented the wheel, by also adding SpybotSD.exe and AD-Aware.exe to the register and giving them a low priority / CPU alotment, even lower than UD agent. Now they too run unobtrusively, without slowing any front app down.....that's how they should have been designed anyway! Who cares if they finish their scan for evil in 5 minutes or 15 minutes, long as it gets Swatted.

ciao ciao.

Re: ThreadMaster successful stories

For those with fear of editing their registry, a registry update file can be created from the text between the dotted lines. Copy it, past it into Notepad and save it with a .REG extension to e.g. your desktop. Then doubleclick it and select install. Call it something like WCGTreadThrottle.reg. Each time a new science name is determined either from an added project or a version number change, edit this file, save it with a new name and run it again, then restart BOINC. Oh and u determine the percentages... my choice was 80 for BOINC, and 15 for UD sciences.

....................................................................................................

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ThreadMaster\Parameters]
"CPUThresholdPct"="95"

"ThreadOverloadActionStop"=""

;
; Clear previous ThreadMaster Applications
;
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ThreadMaster\Parameters\Applications]

;
; Add new ThreadMaster Applications to Throttle
;
; NOTE: Setting CPUThresholdPct to 100 prevents these from throttling
; NOTE: Use the Image Name exactly as it appears in Task Manager.
; You do NOT need 2 entries one with and one without the .exe extension.
