i have just trial ran the program for 5 minutes, logged off the user, shut down the machine, started the machine back up this morning and all progress has been lost. its starting the unit again.
so my questions are, 1, if i log off or even power cylc the unit will it allways lose what work as been processed ? 2, with the screen saver mode, i have installed this on a suit machine at work as a test as the Admin user but as it does not run as a service any other user does not see this and the software does not run when its not logged in as the admin user, thus limiting my ability to use all 400 + machine at my disposal. 3, does it save parts of a unit processed? 4, how long does a normal unit take to process on the "base norm" ie the average? |

I cannot answer your other questions, but found an answer to your question number 2 in another thread. I cut/paste a response to a similar question made by user Gromit in which he describes how to start WCG as a system task:
"Yes, you can run it without being logged on. First, the free method: The agent will crunch, but the send/receive functions generally will not work until someone logs on. There probably won't be a problem with that, since the agent doesn't need constant access to the internet. To run the agent before log on do the following: 1. Create a new task in your task scheduler. When creating it, browse to the "C:\Program Files\WorldCommunityGrid" folder and select UD.exe. Click OPEN. 2. Select the "When My Computer Starts" radio button and click NEXT. 3. Enter the windows password associated with the log on. It helps if the user doing this has administrator privileges. Click NEXT. 4. Click the "Open advanced properties for this task when I click finish" box and make sure it's checked. Click FINISH. 5. In the next window, click the SETTINGS tab and uncheck the "Stop task if it runs for" box. Click OK. 6. Delete the World Community Grid Agent shortcut in your startup folder. The agent will start when the computer boots up. If you log on with another user name, the icon in the task manager will not be visible, though. You can check to make sure that the agent is running by looking at your Task Manager and making sure that the WCGrid_Rosetta process is running. Another method is to use Firedaemon to run the agent as a service. I can provide info on that if ayone wants, but it's a 30 day trial and then you have to buy it. (For those hard-core crunchers out there)." |

I will try to answer your first and third questions:
1, if i log off or even power cylc the unit will it allways lose what work as been processed ? 3, does it save parts of a unit processed? Rick Alther made a number of posts answering questions like these at the start of the grid. You can run SEARCH for Alther and find his posts. He said that the Rosetta program checkpoints into a disk file each time the percent completed increments. So if you turn off the program at 10 percent, it should restart at 10 percent. Of course, all computations done after that checkpoint are lost. If something corrupts the file, then it will restart at the beginning. 2, with the screen saver mode, i have installed this on a suit machine at work as a test as the Admin user but as it does not run as a service any other user does not see this and the software does not run when its not logged in as the admin user, thus limiting my ability to use all 400 + machine at my disposal. In one post, he explained that the grid client automatically installs for the current user to avoid privacy issues, trying to be a good citizen. Change that at your own risk and discretion. 4, how long does a normal unit take to process on the "base norm" ie the average? People have commented that the Human Proteome Work Units on the UD site are described as trying to be 20 hours long for a fairly slow “base unit”. That sounds right from what I have seen here, but Alther warns that computation is ‘non-deterministic’, so there are no guarantees. |

You say the client started the unit over again? But you only ran it for 5 minutes. Did it actually acomplish anything in those 5 min?
