As an antedote to some of the trivia that appears on the WCG Forums I thought I'd take the inititive and start a thread on what brings you here to crunch and what drives you to keep on crunching.
----------------------------------------OK I'll start. I discovered distributed computing through SETI@Home but after 111 days of searching for ET I discovered United Devices who were using Grid Technology to find drug molecules to halt various known Cancer causing protein molecules. I have a large family my Mum is one of 11 Children, in all my Grandma was pregnant for 9 years !!! As such I have a great multitude of Uncles, Aunties, Cousins, Nephews and Nieces. It would be fair to say we stopped counting after cousin number 48 as I sit here tonight I don't know if even today one more might have been added to our number. Now with a family that big I'm sure you will realise that along the way various family members have had to face the scourge of Cancer and I just wanted to kick back hard. The World Community Grid just broadens that scope opening the possibilities of putting paid to many of Mankind's ailments. I have suffered for a number of years with what Winston Churchill called "The black dog" This causes as much pain as any physical illness even though it is intangible. Some days it renders me speechless so if I don't get back to you immediately on that email it really is because I am a grumpy old git ![]() In the meantime I will give what I can to this great project to which we have already provided a toolkit to be a catalyst for future medical research through the 20,000 years of PC time donated to the HPF project. Tonight it looks like we'll break through 30,000 years with many drug molecules already removed which would have proved fruitless in the search for a treatment for HIV. As we continue the search 1 maybe more of those candidate molecules will be the one we are looking for. This is what drives me to keep on crunching and you? Dave ![]() |

Easy answer
![]() I crunch here because FightAIDS@Home is here, although I crunch all WCG projects. I have lost too many friends and lovers to AIDS. As an IT professional and a Gay man, this is where my skills and the resources at my disposal can help in a small way. |

My team are here and I'm a stats junkie
![]() The fact that I may help, in some small way, to ease somebody's suffering in the future is an added bonus. |

I started here because I heard of the Human Protine folding project. I was very happy to hear that HIV was the next project. I lost a childhood friend of 25 yrs to HIV, and it was not something I'd wish anyone to watch happen to a friend, family member or lover. This makes no difference, but he was gay and and I'm not, he was still my best friend, and I mourn his passing every day.

Why are you crunching for the World Community Grid? I’ll try and not be so long winded this time. ![]() I’m a HIV-negative gay man who has a good friend who is a HIV-positive gay man. Until a cure is found, I live with the realistic fear that I will one day loose someone I care about to that disease. When FAAH ends, the crunching will go on. There are a lot more diseases to fight. In a world filled with deceit, discrimination, hatred, and selfishness, I think efforts such the WCG projects help bring a little more humanity to the human race. Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. - Calvin Coolidge |

My turn?
Ok. For me it’s kinda complicated. I’m really not here Cancer is my big bug-a-boo so that’s what I fight in many many ways. I believe in the bigger hammer approach so mapping the human proteome suites me. When the project designed to fight cancer comes back on line I’m there. I have 25 years of computing and what I am more proud about 5 years of real time in the project so as you can see I don’t give up my project easily. That means you all are stuck with me now that I am here until the proteome is over. This is my backup project for the times my primary isn’t running well. |

I crunch here in the hope that what I do may contribute to finding cures to some of the heartbreaking disease out there.
My Mum passed away 9 years ago from Motor Neurone Disease and my Dad just before Christmas with Cancer - the fact I could do nothing to help either of them haunts me every day. I now live in hope that I can help others in the future to not have to go through the suffering they both did. |

Friends, my reason for crunching is aligned with many of you, for the awesome opportunity we have been blessed with here to make a tangible positive contribution to the human condition, and for all humans worldwide.
Man, to think that someone's little computer, even mine, could crank out the one solution that solves cancer, or HIV, or world hunger! How immense this idea is! How vividly this project underscores the potential of every person to change the world through some sort of contribution to the greater good, in any form! I'm sure it's been expressed on this bulletin board by others, in similar words, that people feel both humbled and empowered after realizing the potential of the individual. Also, as an IBM employee, I'm thrilled that my company reaches out to benefit the world as it does, in various programs which help the needy. I'm grateful they've provided me (and millions) with this easy way to contribute. This project not only blesses the sick or disadvantaged with potential solutions, but also blesses the average joe in modern society who struggles with finding time for philanthropic efforts. |

OK! As with many people, I cut my teeth crunching SETI. I then found Grid.org and worked on the fight against cancer for quite a while, until everything there went pear-shaped. Now I crunch for WCG. The reason, I've lost a fiance, 2 close friends and 2 grandparents to various forms of cancer. If I can't continue to help fight cancer, the AIDS project is the next best thing for me.
