I check my system with compared system and it's 100% everywhere. With CPU power it's 104%. But with storage it's 20%. It says my storage capability is 0.98G compared to 5G of the "average" machine. I have tens of GBs available on my harddrive! Only thing is, the C-drive is packed, with only 240MB left. Barely enough to handle Windows. The D-drive, however, has plenty of space and that's where the client is installed. I wanna participate the best I can. Does low storage capability actually matter in this project? And if it does, how can I improve mine?

You can change your device profile to be up to 10Gb. It will help the overall computer power calculation a bit. 1Gb (0.98) was the default.

Start here. Change the default profile, or create a new one.

Hello Dharwish,
If you click on 'My Grid' - 'Device Manager' - 'Device Profiles' you will be able to create a new device profile. Name it something like BigDharwish1 ('default' is not allowed) and use the drop down menu at the top to change the allowed disk storage from 1 GB to 10 GB. Then 'Save'. The final step is to assign the new named profile to your device (computer), replacing 'default'. When your client returns its next result file, it will download the new profile. You can check that in the 'Device Profile' panel on your UD client. Lawrence |

Hello Dharwish,
No, the current HPF project fits comfortably within 50 MB on your disk, so increasing the maximum storage allowed to more than 1 GB has no effect. As for overclocking -- that probably accounts for a fair percentage of the errors we get which make it necessary to get 4 identical results to validate a work unit. Do not overclock to help the WCG. Only overclock if you have a different (and better) reason. About the only way to speed up processing is NOT to run the WCG screensaver (or any other 3-D screensaver). It is only needed if you run the UD client in screensaver-only mode. I use the 'blank' screensaver myself. Also, have enough memory in your computer to avoid a lot of paging while doing simple tasks and running WCG. On my Windows XP computer, 256 MB is plenty for HPF but the larger FAAH program needs 384 MB to avoid paging while browsing the web, sending email, etc. Lawrence |

And if it does, how can I improve mine? A side issue, but the C drive being full is a bad thing. This is the Windows System Drive. You can alleviate this by moving the Windows Pagefile to drive D. This may gain 1GB or more on C. It is also more efficient for Windows to have this on a separate physical drive. To do this go to ControlPanel/System/Advanced/Performance-Settings/Advanced/Virtual Memory-Change. In here you can switch off the pagefile on C and set up a new file on D. You need to reboot. After, you should see a gain on drive C. If not, check what you have done. If you did it correctly, you may need to manually delete the old pagefile on drive C. This is hidden by default, so use Tools/Folder Options/View. Change "show Hidden Files and Folders" and ALSO uncheck "Hide Protected operating System Files". You should now see a new pagefil.sys on D and possibly the old one on C. Delete the one on C. Dont worry - it wont let you if it is still in use. When you have finished, be sure to reset "show Hidden Files and Folders" and "Hide Protected operating System Files" to the hidden state. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by Dirk Gently at Apr 2, 2006 11:15:47 AM] |
