Programming is one thing. The Science behind proteome folding is another. To bring them together is a difficult task to say the least.
This is a limited time project which I believe will be completed within a year, provided the membership is sufficient. The program seems to be working now so no need to fix/break something that's not broken. It appears the scientists and programmers have it under control.


I can't imagine what would happen if this was open source. Actually this opens up an interesting can of worms and brings to mind various scenarios.
What will happen in the near future when anyone can take advantage of grid technology to work on their own personal projects, such as nuclear fission or the like.
Of course everyone on any grid will have the choice of what they choose to have their computer to work on, but lets say everyone in China decides to help their government develop weapons etc.

The folding protein graphic IS nothing more than an image front and has nothing to do with the real processing happening behind the scenes.

The project is of course working on protein folding. I would only be concerned if this concept came out of a remote cave in Afghanistan, or the like, of which it did not.

The prospects of grid technology being used by the military of another country is not as far reaching as it may sound.

Afterall, lets not forget, the concept of the internet was in fact military based.

I know because I asked the mice that do all the computations inside the computer. They've assured me it's all on the up and up. Additionally I consulted the ants that bring the tiny workfiles in through the wire.
Of course, they are "red" ants, those little b**tards might just be communist, you never can tell.

What I said about the graphic is simple logic. I don't have a reference to this. I could not find a reference to this. I did not expect there would be a reference to this. I imagine people that know this had the opinion of "Why rain on the parade".

I couldn't imagine the wasted resources of having each graphic match each protein and each calculation of movenent to match the computational process of 3 billion operations a second.

Mabye to get back to the more germain part of the original discussion, rather than the "are the graphics real or not" thing.

I found it interesting and even a little troubling that the smallpox project was for the US Dept. of Defense. While I am all for defending my country, I don't like the idea of a resource like this being used by any defense departments/ministries.

I, for one, will remove myself from the WCG if I suspect that the benefactors of these projects are anything but the general public.
