Hi All

Just joined the team (I think) and wanted to say howdy. I'm pretty illiterate when it comes to computers, so if I ever ask a really dumb question, please excuse me. I have had one pc going on the grid for about a week and have 2 more that I'll be adding in the near future. I do have a couple of questions about limiting the processor usage on the machines and also about how to hook the other ones up to the grid. IF anyone out there has the time and patience to either tell me which area to go to for answers, or to help me themselves thru e-mail or yahoo chat, I would appreciate it. I have a personal reason for trying to help with this, so I am very excited about being to help in my own small way.

Thanks Mac586 (Ron)

Re: Hi All

Welcome to WCG, Mac586! I would not worry about limiting the processor usage. I have been crunching since last January for several DC projects.

I only have one PC (and a miserable backup PC which I need to upgrade).

I just keep it on all the time when I am using it. And my PC is a business rig. Sometimes, I even run this 24/7 a couple times a week.

Just keep your PC clean using compressed air and so forth. wink

Re: Hi All

Wow, thanks for the fast reply and welcome. Let me ask you a question. If my processor is crunching (is that the right word) and processor is showing 100 % usage, what happens if I start to use a program that is processor intensive?

thanks

Ron

Not to worry. If you run another program, WCG won't hog all the resources.

Try this ...

Run your WCG (UD device). Start another memory intensive program. Put your UD device in "snooze". Then, reactivate it. And when checking out your "Task Manager", you will see the UD device "back down". I have done this several times to make sure.

Just try it. wink

Re: Hi All

You shouldn't have a problem with WCG or BOINC.

They take 'low priority' to anything else running on your pc.

I play games on my pc most nights and never 'snooze' or stop the client, and it dont make any difference. smile
