Compressing uploads (results)

Please consider using data compression (7zip, RAR, gzip etc) for any files moved across the Internet.

Today I noticed the 2.2MByte result from HPF/Rosetta4.2 as it was getting uploaded back to you. It was a plain tabular text file, being sent uncompressed over the Internet!

As a test, I copied it to keep it and later I compressed it with RAR and it was reduced from 2.2MB to just 500KBytes. Please don't waste the resources of volunteer donors like this! (many countries have traffic quotas and surcharges even for ADSL, not to mention volunteers using dialup).

That is a known problem with BOINC. Our UD Windows agent compresses everything nicely. I have not heard of any schedule for adding this to BOINC yet, but it will happen.

Re: Compressing uploads (results)

Please hurry up.

Note that every other project (total of 6) I've joined via BOINC is utilizing some sort of compression and sometimes crunchers are complaining because a project is using e.g. gzip instead of the even more efficient 7zip.

Re: Compressing uploads (results)

The download files for FightAids@Home (nonboinc) are tiny compared with HPF, about 50,000 bytes instead of 800,000 bytes to 1,000,000 bytes. Boinc just started yesterday for FA@H, so I don't know what file sizes are dealing with.
