Logging Internet Bandwidth or Setting Days to Download

Hello

In my country (and many others) we pay for broadband internet bandwidth, so usage is important. Is there a *simple* way of tracking (or controlling) how much is used by the agent?

Also, some providers here offer "unlimited free bandwidth" at the end of the month (25th - 31st) and limited bandwidth on other days. Is the Device Profile going to allow us to set month days (e.g. 25th) not just week days (e.g. Mondays, which doesn't help) for bandwidth usage?

Thanks
Michael

Re: Logging Internet Bandwidth or Setting Days to Download

(1) I advise running the FightAids@Home project if you are not already.
Transfer files are TINY, less than 50,000 BYTES each. Compare to the 800,000 to 1,000,000 BYTE files needed for HPF. BOINC should be available for this in the next few weeks.

(2) Change to BOINC (pending for FA@H) or use UDMonitor. You can bulk up on the number of workunits. Make sure that you complete each unit within the two weeks since it was downloaded. I think you can save results and send them in later....when you want. A month's worth of workunits is a bunch, though, depending on the speed of your computer.

(3) This may be overkill. The amount of bandwidth needed on the internet directly for the project is really very small. It takes more bandwidth to merely look at the forum or browse a webpage.

Re: Logging Internet Bandwidth or Setting Days to Download

Thanks so much, that is very helpful. 50KB is just fine, but 1MB is not fine, so I'll just do the AIDS processing.

Regarding all the other stuff (BOINC), that sounds far too complicated. Like most people, if it isn't simple, I won't really get involved. smile

I appreciate your quick response.

All the best
Michael

Re: Logging Internet Bandwidth or Setting Days to Download

Hello Michael Gallias,
The Windows United Devices client uses very compressed files for FAAH, much smaller than HPF and I suspect smaller than FAAH on BOINC will be, though that has yet to be seen. Set your profile for FightAIDS@Home and your bandwidth usage should be very small.

Oh it is quite simple. I had it installed and running in a matter of minutes. See the Start Here forum for details on downloading BOINC for Windows. Once you have it installed and running, go to Device Profiles on the WCG website, select the profile for BOINC and set "Connect to network about every X days " to 2. That will have BOINC download enough workunits to run for that long. If a WU is finished and you are not connected, BOINC will simply flag that it cannot upload the WU. When you do connect, go to the Transfers tab of BOINC, select the available WU and click on Retry Now. It will upload them then. After the uploads are complete,go to the Projects tab, select the WCG project entry and click on Update Now so that the WCG server is told that you've completed the WU's.

If you want, simply set your UD agent to not run, try BOINC, and then uninstall UD if you like BOINC. See link for more details on switching from UD to BOINC.
