Moderators and Software Updates Needed NOW!

To: WCG staff

I highly suggest you recruit forum moderators soon. With the huge influx of of new users things are becoming a bit disorganized with multiple threads being created on the same topics. All of these need to be merged into one thread and/or an FAQ made updated and someone at WCG to answer the questions. I realize you may be understaffed and the forums may be the last priority, however, you hopefully realized with your annoucement to the media that you were going to get a huge increase in members. I personal feel you were unprepared for the problems which were to follow. Of course only a fraction of the issues could have been adressed and only when more and more people start using something new will you find new problems, however the key issue here is that our concerns are not being addressed in a timely fashion and I guarantee many users will become discontent and simply quit the project after completing none to 2-3 work units.

1. The software desperatly needs to be updated.
- features added for caching work units - this morning I woke up to find my whole thing had stopped, a comlete waste of time that I could have had either Seti running or at least had a spare WU to work on fromt he WCG. This is what really makes me angry, my PC sat idle for the whole night, a 10 hour waste of computer time because the WU was corrupted somehow. 3 hours of the percentage finished on 0% before I went to bed, which I have found is normal, however, no points were issued for the corrupted work unit even though there were over three hours of CPU time dedicated. Until these problems are addressed I am highly likely to return to using SETI because at least I know how many work units I can complete each day and will have 0% problems with the client. Your software needs to work in order for us to assist you! Fix it!

A better organization of your forums will better let us find answers quickly rather than posting the same questions over and over again. The FAQ has not been updated in days and numerous other issues have been found.

Thanks.

Nothing has been updated in any of the read-only sections of this forum since day of launch. I (and SO many more in other threads) am so disappointed that after the kick-off of the project, the people who are doing the project have been so ignored. The tech's are doing a good job trying to respond timely to questions but there seems to be no "official" coordination to this effort. I guess we are just "piece workers" in a sweat shop. <LOL> If something does not happen soon, I will just walk away and leave them with my 8 WU's. But then you might notice that you cannot "unsubscribe" either. Your membership and your devices will always be included in the marketing releases as to the "success" of the project.

Unlike the CPU clock on the agent .... my clock is ticking down. <dataman>

Re: Moderators and Software Updates Needed NOW!

Perhaps an open-type-source model could help alleviate some of the problems. Many people (well, me at least) would be keen to look at the software to:
1. Learn about Ian Forster and his buddies are calling the grid these days.
2. Learn about the problems themselves.
3. Help resolve some of the problems qucikly seen with the software (Some can probably be fixed more quicly than what it takes a geek to write a post)
4. Help porting the client to obscure, unpopular, seldom used client platfroms like Linux

LOL phadrus

Did you notice the irony that IBM's host runs on Linux and AIX ... but UD's client (Licensed by IBM) does not support Linux .... well, I thought that was interesting. Thanks! <dataman>

Re: Moderators and Software Updates Needed NOW!

Hi Data

I didn't, but I must say I wasn't looking. But hey, I am sure there is a very good reason for that, right. Linux and AIX - oh so different - pouzix, how do you spell that.

I have been trying to see under the grand marketing nature of this endavour. Hey, we find some sweet protein that fixes cancer, the world population shoots up to 133 billion, we all live forever....

But I do beleive that the issue of Intellectual Property is very important - what happens to what we discover. Can I get to know what I paid for discovering? Can I share it with someone else? I think "they" need to make a statement one way or the other wrt who will the IP be made available to and for what purposes. Perhaps they have, but I cannot find it. Not saying that the screensaver itself isn't pretty good, but...

The reason I decided to participate was that "You too can change the world" business. I am rather hopefull that that does not imply improving the bottom line of a global pharmaceutical or/and helping IBM shift more boxes and that overpriced behemoth called Websphere. (actually, I am under no illusions about the latter - "Websphere, the grid platform. IF says so").

See - I could have fixed a bug.

Re: Moderators and Software Updates Needed NOW!

I too am extremely dissapointed in just trying to use this software. All that the common user wants to do is install it, let it run, and forget about it. That's what this software should do and it simply does not do that.
It takes almost an hour to download 64,000 bytes from the server and 10 minutes just to bring up these forum pages. Kind of insane.
Then if and when the download completes it simply starts over again, give an error that it cannot connect to the grid, or that it cannot "Write to the directory" - for that last issue it gave a link and I thought, great maybe I can find out what's wrong. Nope, nothing in the link to help at all.

So, I followed another link I found in another post "http://www.grid.org" and downloaded what appears to be a very similiar software program for cancer research, I was up and running in less than 4 minutes TOTAL.

You lost a user in this forum World Community Grid. End of story.

Re: Moderators and Software Updates Needed NOW!

Yes, phadrus and Snowblind, I too like to "hug trees" too but am quite disappointed in my choice of this tree. Was so committed in the begining. I can only deduct that the project's sponsors are disappointed in the first week's launch statistics based on their communications to-date with the Members. The marketing releases on launch day said a goal of a million members. We have 20K so far. The math is not hard. <G>

But not like my thoughts are important in my postingsx {are yours?}

<LOL>

Re: Moderators and Software Updates Needed NOW!

I haven't done any work for Folding@home since last January. Since I've gotten the bug again, maybe I'll go back...

Re: Moderators and Software Updates Needed NOW!

I'm sure the tech's are doing what they can, but as you said there is some disorganization somewhere along to lines.

I was very excited to start this project, and now feel I'm wasting my time. There are so many unanswered questions, some of which are of ethical value, all of which remain unanswered.

I made a decision today that I am dropping this grid and will not recommend it to others until I am satisfied and assured things are in working order. I have found several add on problems for the agent, but have not seen any feedback about them yet. The problem is even with those add-ons, if they work, that doesn't mean the WCG program will still function properly.

Until someone has answered or solved these problems I won't be doing any more work units for you, I have gone back to running Seti full time, which is still a huge interest of mine and I refuse to give it up completely. And until someone out there can find a viable solution to run both grids, on the came CPU and let both programs have equal CPU time, then I will probably stick with Seti.

The Work that WCG is proposing seems very valuable to the reasearch community, however, there are so many unanswered questions about who owes the research, what will be done with it, etc, that I am not sure I wish to remain a part of that until someone makes a firm stand on it.

The software has glitches and I think people will stop using the application soon. It's too bad that you didn't learn more from other grids, like Seti, before inviting us to use yours. I am disappointed at all the bugs, this simply should not have happend, you ran PR which meant you were ready and you weren't. I firmly believe you will be getting just the opposite soon if the problems are not fixed.

I do look forward to the day I can once again assist the research and medical world, but until our concerns are addressed I'm finished.
