I like to have the agent running continuosly, not as a screen saver, but
the FA@H agent seems to consume a lot of resources and my machine slows down. I am already running some memory hungry applications. Will adding more memory help? currently I have 512MB. Swap file is at 754MB and system managed. Have a Celleron 2.4 Ghz. I assume FA@H is using paged memory intensely so adding more RAM would help. Before I go out and buy more memory I need to know if it will be worth it as I would only be buying memory to make running the agent more efficient. Am considering another 512MB. Thanks, Finiduck the AIDS fighter |

i think you can open task manager, performance. 'physical memory' total shows your installed ram, and 'commit charge' total shows your current ram usage as 'total'.
----------------------------------------if used total is more than installed total, you may want more more but i don't think you need it. not real sure, so, umm next person? [Edit 2 times, last edit by Former Member at Jan 13, 2006 8:22:59 AM] |

Hello finiduck,
There are certainly many people who are much more knowledgable than myself, but I'll start the ball rolling. Ever since Windows XP came out, I have been of the opinion that light usage of the computer (web browsing, word processing) requires 230-240 MB to run without unnecessary paging. Memory has been cheap enough that I have always urged 256 MB for Windows XP systems. The most important size of a program is the 'working set' of pages that it should keep in memory to avoid extra paging. That is less than 100 MB for either of our projects, even for our largest project, FAAH. So even 384 MB would allow a computer to run FAAH at full speed while doing all the normal routine. (At least, no slow down due to memory constraints.) With 512 MB, you can run some serious programs and still expect that the project can quickly take advantage of any spare CPU cycles. Obviously, it all depends on just what applications you are running. But do keep in mind that we use 300 MB of Virtual Memory, which is much more than non-scientific applications normally use. So make sure that your Windows XP system is set by default to expand the VM automatically if required, because a big application could run your VM past its current setting. This is my opinion. Anybody want to chime in with theirs? mycrofth |

I've just increased the RAM in one of my PC's from 256MB to 1,256MB and this has made a very noticeable improvement in the general slickness of opening and closing applications, starting and closing Windows, and so on.
I doubt whether this has done anything for the performance of the UD agent, although of course it has improved my machine "score" that is used to calculate points. I run the agent continuously 24/7 and to be honest I have never found that it impacts in any way with my normal computing activities. I agree with mycrofth about the VM settings. Happy crunching, David. |
