Re: Crunchers Inc........Boinc to the future

Hi WW and good morning to all.

Yes, I'm back. Finally got to 2 million points over @ grid despite the problems there and have come back to a project that works almost trouble free. Should be a refreshing change.

I see that I've slipped to 9th on the team. That's OK, you guys have been crunchin' hard, but I'm determined not to drop any further. Won't be much of a threat to those above me as I don't have the arsenal to mount a challenge but I'll do the best I can for the team.

Crunch on! biggrin

Hi John, impressive feat over at Grid - well done indeed cool

Wilber is getting closer everyday, not long before I lose 7th place to him worried The team is looking good though, getting stronger every week - should be making around 1/2 million per week soon cool

If you're feeling chatty pop over to the Crunchers forum - something for everyone smile

Points earned last 7 days = 441,698. With just 1 or 2 new teamies we can push past 500k per week.

Re: Crunchers Inc........Boinc to the future

Hey John great to see you back. biggrin

I have a question for you guys and i know this has been asked and anwsered before but i am too lazy to search, is it best to run the standard WCG client or to run Boinc? do you get more points running Boinc? do the work units get processed quick because you dont have that stupid graphics thing going on? i am currently running the wtandard client in non screensaver mode and i was just wondering if it was worth switching?

Thanks Ian.

If I may be allowed to smap in here - it really depends on your CPU, from my research I would say anything around 2GHz or more should definately produce more points, below that is marginal. Boinc is also more flexible if you want to switch around other projects as well.
As to whether units get processed more quickly is a matter for debate, it seems to me that it may well be the case.

I hope this helps.

And while I'm here - Hi Big V and all hugs - great crunching guys an gals biggrin

Re: Crunchers Inc........Boinc to the future

Hi Kegsy biggrin

As Ady said, BOINC *can* give an uplift in points. On some machines however, there is very little difference points-wise. There are 2 things I like about BOINC, over the UD agent:

1. Ability to cache WU's within the agent;
2. Flexibility to swap between worthy projects (check my sig for more info).

My advice is to download the BOINC client here (currently using 5.2.13 and very stable) and give it a try - I don't think you'll be disappointed.

If you have any more questions just shout up - there are plenty around here who have already gone down the BOINC route and are happy with that decision. You could also ask on our forums biggrin

Re: Crunchers Inc........Boinc to the future

Hello. wink

I find that BOINC:

1) seems to give a small increase in results because after changing to it my rank started going up a little again after leveling off with the standard client.

2) gave all my machines a fair increase in points credit/day with the faster machines getting the most extra.

3) gave me a little more run time because it counts my hyperthreaded p4 as two cores.

Morning Wilber, just off-loading the weekend caches - don't think I'll be able to hold you off for too much longer. Looks like John is looking to reclaim a couple of places also sad

biggrin

We're looking for our next team mate - to Crunch, or Smap - or both cool
