Research Produces Images Of AIDS Virus That May Shape Vaccine The article says that they studied HIV-1 (which has 14 'spikes' on the surface of the virus) plus a mutated version of SIV which expressed about 74 'spikes'. The image is listed as HIV-1 but it has a lot more than 14 spikes on its surface. Oh well. . . . |

"Spikes" i think are those responses substantially over the average.....i.e. have an amplified interest with the scientists..... a complete (albeit educated) guess
