How do people display stats in their signature?

I've tried researching this on my own, and found a thread with a link to http://sero.cwsurf.de/ for a 'sig generator'. Some of the features don't seem to be working right because when I asked for a list of backgrounds, the website 'timed out'. Also, there are no instructions to explain what some of those lines are. Anyway, I filled in the blanks for most of the data, generated an URL, and then pasted it into my sig file, but WCG said there were too many characters and truncated it. Before I mess around experimenting with this anymore, is there a FAQ or thread I can visit to make this easier and answer my questions?

Thanks.

Bill the thread you are looking for is here

http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=2904#31676

If you use the search facility in the top right hand corner of the screen that's the way to find your way around.

Your signature file is up to a maximum of 250 characters including spaces so you have to be fairly innovative with what you need to say. Tiny URL will help in this matter

All the best

Dave

Re: How do people display stats in their signature?

Bill --

A couple of other pointers on reducing the numbers of characters in your signature file. You can reduce the size of any url you reference by using TinyURL.com. In addition, the pseudo-HTML in use in the forum will fill in the "http://" for url's you reference as well. For example, your signature references the graphic at http://home.alltel.net/billvelek/pale-beer.gif. I was able to reduce this from 46 characters to 24 using TinyURL.com and got http://tinyurl.com/8z3br. Then, further reducing it by stripping off the "http://" gets it down to 17 characters, "tinyurl.com/8z3br"

So, instead of coding 56 characters:

{img]http://home.alltel.net/billvelek/pale-beer.gif[img]

you can use (28 characters, half what you are now using):

{img]tinyurl.com/8z3br[/img]

which will generate

Go ahead and use the tinyurl.com/8z3br I created -- since it will always be available once created.

Re: How do people display stats in their signature?

Thanks. I've made those changes you've suggested, but can't seem to get the image with my stats to come up. I've also noticed a number of other signature files on these forums seem to have broken gifs, so maybe something is down. I've try again later.

Thanks.

Try generating your stats image again and then generate a new TinyURL for it. I looked for http://tinyurl.com/8ydb2l and get an error message from TinyURL.com saying that it could not find the URL to redirect to. This would indicate that what you put into TinyURL initially to generate the smaller one wasn't really there.

Re: How do people display stats in their signature?

Okay, I went to http://sero.cwsurf.de/generator.php again and entered the data and then clicked on 'Generate Link'; I then cut and pasted that link into TinyURL and it generated the same tinyurl -- http://tinyurl.com/8ydb2 -- that I originally received and which did not work for you. I pasted that into a new window and I received the message: "Connection was refused when attempting to contact local host", which I presume is the website which generates and stores the stats for each user who has generated a panel.

As I said, I have noticed a number of other sig files with broken gifs, so I suspect that something isn't working right somewhere else.

Thanks.

Re: How do people display stats in their signature?

David, I've tried loading an existing panel, and doing all sorts of things, and I can't seem to generate a .gif

I'm sure I'm modifying my sig file correctly, because I when I used your .gif, it loaded correctly. I'm about to give up on sero.cwsurf.de ... are there any other ways to generate a statistics banner?

Thanks.

I took a shot at creating a stats image for you and it definately is not working. I will start a thread addressed to Börni (the guy that developed that site). Hopefully he will see the post and respond. I'm not aware of any other way of creating such an image.
