I suggest to translate the main site into the most common languages to get more people involved in this and to speed up the whole thing.
And I'm quite sure that there are some people who would like to help on the translations. In fact that's another task for a "grid": Just let the people tell which languages they are able to translate, and then give them small parts of the pages for translation. In a few days we could have a multilingual site. Well, the translations and the coordination must yet be made by human brains, not by computers. But the grid enables to use resources from all over the world. So let's start a new project "WEBSITE_TRANSLATION"... Regards, Ingo (from Germany) |

Read carefully: WORLD COMMUNITY meaning we are sposed to be able to read and understand all ppl so if ppl start talking in a foreign language how are they expecting to be helped other then by their fellow language ppl ?? so learn english and everyone can understand each other ( NO, english is also NOT my native language !! ) Not everyone in the world speaks English..700 million Mandarin Chinese can't be wrong ;). I understand that the Internet and most of the business world has adopted English as the primary language, but the idea of this project (and also the idea of your post) is about world community, and what better way to make someone feel more welcome into the community than to greet them in their mother tongue? I, for one, volunteer my services to WEBSITE_TRANSLATION...just send me some Polish packets and make sure they don't make my brain restart halfway through. ;) |

Read carefully: WORLD COMMUNITY meaning we are sposed to be able to read and understand all ppl Read even more carefully: It's "world community", not "english speaking community"... so if ppl start talking in a foreign language how are they expecting to be helped other then by their fellow language ppl ?? That's the point: If a project is explained only in a language which is a foreign language for the majority in the world - how can someone expect other people to join in who do not understand english? so learn english and everyone can understand each other No, for that reason everyone had to learn english (or chinese), not just me... To all of the English speaking participants, your English is much better than my Chinese, German, etc. of which I speak none. (I do speak a little Spanish though). Fortunately there is one common language for us all. So thanks for learning English so that we can all communicate with one another and I agree, sites for native language participants would be a big help in getting non-english speaking people to participate.

English is the most widely understood (though not spoken) language in the world. Having said that 75% of the worlds population DO NOT understand English. As the WORLD COMMUNITY grid we should be making access and contribution as simple as possible for all people, what ever their country of origin.
As a British citizen I find the suggestion that people should learn English as both chauvinistic and offensive. Mandarin is the first language of more people than any other language and yet few people make any attempt to learn it or cater for its speakers. As a world wide project it seems obvious to me that we should be providing as many translations as is reasonably possible. You may want to look at the BBC world service website for an example of a resource that caters for the world community (http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/us/languages.shtml). Bluemug |

Oh.. there's a simple answer to this.. it's so simple I'm really concerned noone has offered it up.... sure... we have code pages and all that.. but the real problem is.. programmers can only communicate in one language.. it's called PROFANITY
