Hi !
Is there any diffrence in speed of computing by Linux (command line without KDE or GNOME enviroment) or Windows agent ?? Is there a lot of processor's computing power used byWindow's graphical enviroment ? the point is, that I leave may PC on, switch my display off and go to school. Should I leave LINUX or Windows Agent crunching ??? I think that I should leave LINUX because in Windows there is working also Antivirus and firewall - but what do you think about ?? |

I can't really answer which might be faster, but you can reduce the impact of the graphics in the Windows environment by setting your screen saver to none and then either turn off your monitor manually when you aren't at the PC or automatically through the use of the power settings. Best regards, |

Hi ! Nope!Is there any diffrence in speed of computing by Linux (command line without KDE or GNOME enviroment) or Windows agent ?? X will use 0.5% of the system ... Is there a lot of processor's computing power used byWindow's graphical enviroment ? Well not really ... the Grapics card is suposed to do that. the point is, that I leave may PC on, switch my display off and go to school. Should I leave LINUX or Windows Agent crunching ??? Both ... except I think you are dual-booting I think that I should leave LINUX because in Windows there is working also Antivirus and firewall - but what do you think about ?? Are you dual-boooting ... if so just pick one ... Linux does not do Aids, Windows does ... ![]() |

I'm really a noob here, but this might help; To use minimum resources (more important on an old, slow, low memory computer) don't set X to launch automaticily at boot. Just login on the command line, then use your command history to set to the proper current directory, and then again to launch the boinc script. to launch the gui when you want to, the command "startx" should work. -AkBrian |

Hello kwiatek,
I will add my own opinion. All operating systems work with reasonable efficiency in the background in the situation you are describing. Individual members have occasionally discovered other applications that they have left running in the background hogging the CPU. [Most recently, an Excel97 viewer.] But normally, the only thing you need to do is to avoid graphical screensavers [which do compete for CPU cycles] by selecting 'blank' [a much safer choice than 'none', which could cause burnin on your display]. Also set your display to power down if it is left unused for more than an hour or two. It is best not to cut the power to your display many times a day, since that can increase the chance of a breakdown. mycrofth |

Oka, thanks. To be honest I set my windows to get maximum effeciveness:
- by setting My Computer / Properities / Advanced / performance / I set best effeciveness - not appearance, - setting blank screen saver, - turning off all useless programs at startup, - after I finish working with browser (Firefox rules ;), Excel, Word or anything else I turn them off - most of the time my computer is on, there works only WCG agent, Antivirus and Firewall. Can I do sth else to make my computer crunch faster ??? |

I found, for my system, I can crunch about double the number of work units running the boinc client under linux than directly under windows. Having said which I'm running an optimised linux kernel and I run the client without the boinc manager running all the time.
----------------------------------------That's just me though, YMMV. ![]() Currently being moderated under false pretences |

How have you optimised your linux ?
Have you installad Linux and optimised it ? or mayby found an optimised version for computing only (I don't know if something like that exist :P but someting only with network protocols and ability to compute )? Do you have any useful links ?? |

Green apples to red apples - Linux is faster. I have 2 boxes, same hardware. One is running WindowsXP using the UD agent, the other Knoppix 4 (now installed to hard disk) using boinc. The difference may be boinc's ability to multi-thread but I believe WinXP also introduces unecessary overhead with its fat kernel and useless services.

I am trying to recruit LINUX users. What is the newest version of Boinc?
