Where do the points go ?

Hello everyone,

I've researched to see if this problem was already mentionned, but I didn't find, so in advance, sorry if I mention something that has already been asked.
Some members of my team noticed that if they didn't use the grid agent for like two days they lost 2000 points from their total points when they launched it again. I was surprise to read that and so I launched WCG agent today after 2 or 3 days without using it and I've noticed the same thing.
So what happened ? Is that "normal" (i mean is that a sort of new rule in order to motivate people to run the WCG agent everyday) or is there any problem ?

Thanks in advance for your answer,

Cedric

Cedric --

I have never seen this reported in the forums before. Not having any insight into the databases, we Community Admins would have difficulty determing what might have happened. If you were to document details such as the time and dates that you experienced this and send a Contact Us to the professional staff, they would be able to look at it.

Best Regards,

Re: Where do the points go ?

another thought:

If it is a very old workunit, it will not receive any points when sent in, since there is a timeout limit for both computer time/run time and wall clock time.

Many slow computers take several days to run something before sending it in. There is no daily point penalty.

Flange --

I believe you are awarded points on a timeout, but I don't see that coming into play here. As I understand this problem, he sees that he has so many points on a given day. Then after being down for a few days, he returns and sees the points reduced by a couple thousand.

Best regards,

Re: Where do the points go ?

Obviously when I come to post about an problem I have (it's only my second problem with WCG), it's weird and was never reported before laughing ) Ok thanks for your answers.

I got some informations concerning the exact problem of my two team-mates:
1- she began the work unit a few time before the week end on her laptop (like friday or thursday, but not 2 weeks before). The work unit was ended during the week-end, but since she hadn't internet, she waited till monday to be back at home. She got a new work unit, but didn't get any points (it happened twice to her) But according to her, it didn't take weeks to do the workunit.
2- My team-mate and I: We had a certain total of points. We didn't make run WCG for some days and the next time we've launched WCG, we had lost 2000 pts (obviously it happened twice to me since I think I had about 36000 pts and now I have 32000, it happenned once for him, he had about 5000 pts on wednesday evening, and then this morning he had only about 3000 pts).

So, even if finally there are two different problems, it seems that it's not due to the timeout limit.

I'll write to the professional staff to see what they think about that.

PS: Lewis Caroll, you absolutely understood what I meant wink

Re: Where do the points go ?

Cedric --

Let us know if that doesn't pan out for you and we will see what we can do to help. One thing to note -- points you see on the UD Agent may differ from those you see on the statistics pages. The agent is aware of all you have submitted. Depending upon how you access the statistics, the figures you see could be from six to twenty four hours old since the databases are updated in cycles. Individual statistics (what you see when you access "My Grid") are updated every six hours at Midnight, 6 AM, Noon and 6 PM UTC (or, as most of us know it, GMT). The updates take about 25 minutes to complete, so at 12:25 GMT (7:25 AM here in the US on the east coast), your individual stats should reflect everything sent in more than 25 minutes ago. At 17:59 GMT (12:59 PM here), anything submitted during the previous six hours will not be on the statistics database. Team statistics are similar, except that they are only updated once a day at Midnight GMT. If you were looking at the point totals on the display of the Agent on your computer and comparing them to statistics from the server, this could explain the differences you see.

Best regards,

Re: Where do the points go ?

Ok I'll keep in touch with you through this topic to tell you what has been said to me and how it's worked.
Concerning the difference that can be seen between the Grid and WCG website, our team had worked on sort of huge FAQ (in french since it's a french team), so I'm okay with that, I know it by heart or almost smile

It's already Dec 31st here in France, so I wish you a happy New Year Eve smug

Re: Where do the points go ?

I noticed that my Windows agent (not boinc) does not show all my points. It is a significantly lower number - more than a day's worth now. Seems to be a percentage. Currently on this laptop it shows 1455281 and the webpage is showing 1947486.

So when you say you lost points, it may be what I also experience - online is pretty accurate except that BOINC agents need to be verified so they will not show up until later.

Cedric1912,

You indicated that this is repeatable. Can you please provide the following details first, then stop the agent for two days, and then post the information again.

1) Your total points reported on the UD agent and on the website.
2) Your daily history of points

thanks,
Kevin
