Please consider the other members of your Quorum. Think how long it will be before any of them get any credit. A 10 day queue is far too long ![]() I've placed the queue at 2 days now. Er, what's a Quorum? Read this for information about quorum'sl, points and validation: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=linpointscalc |

Thanks for the info on Quorums, I had no idea it worked that way, I presume this wasn't the case for UD, which I recently moved over from.

Hello Cheule,
Both UD and BOINC start off similarly. The client returns a suggested points score along with the result. But UD awards those points immediately. BOINC waits until a quorum validates the result (or invalidates it), then drops the lowest and highest suggested score, averages the others, and awards the average to everybody returning a valid result. http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=linpointscalc So people who return results long after everybody else in their quorum, holding up validation, are disliked. In particular, people who regularly draw large numbers of work units, ensuring a long delay in validation, are called 'hogs'. There are valid circumstances requiring people to draw many days of work units, but it is good manners to start off small. Try 1 day at a time, or 2 to cover a weekend, and see what is reasonable. mycrofth |

Couple of points.
Join a couple of BOINC projects (you can set the resource share for some projects very much lower than others if you just want outage protection). Those with intermittent connections (modem users in particular fall into this category) will need to set their queue size larger than the expected duration between connections. Those with always on connections are usually best served by keeping the queue size pretty small. |

The only reason I was getting larger numbers of units is because I've recently moved home, and haven't run networking cable throughout the house yet. So while I do have ADSL permanently on, the computers are only occasionally connected for now, the other half is constantly annoyed by tripping over my CAT-5's :)
So at the end of this month I think I'll get some Devolo mains ethernet devices, to save hard work and cable clutter :) When that happens I'll be able to resume running the units on a one-by-one basis. :) |
