i worked on my mom's pc and checked cpu usage.
mcafee was constantly taking almost 40% with 'mcshield.exe'! i figure once a week virus scan is good enough so i turned off the 'load at startup' feature which seems to go too far. |

Hello halfcard,
I use McAfee on one of my computers. After boot, it settles down to a tiny fraction of 1% except during scheduled scans. You might want to fiddle around with the settings in the McAfee Security Center to see what is going on. |

I used to run McAfee antivirus as well. It's included in my ISP's package. But I experienced the same issue. Constant cpu usage. As long as you don't have any programs running, it keeps itself down. But as soon as you're running IE or downloading some binaries from Usenet it starts using 25% CPU (or so).
----------------------------------------Now I'm running AVG Free and that works fine for me, it uses no recources at all. And AVG finds the same number of viruses (none ). ![]() |

Hello halfcard,
I had not noticed earlier, but McShield.exe seems to jump all over, at 0%, 2%, 3% and even 9% while I am doing nothing but running WCG and Task Manager, while the WCG application stays at 98%, occasionally up to 99% or down a little. On my computer running AVG Antivirus, the WCG application is normally at 99% but occasionally flickers down to 98%. I suppose the thing to do is watch what Task Manager says about the WCG application, rather than directly watch McShield.exe, which seems to confuse Task Manager. |
