Prizes !!!

Maybe you should think about starting some kind of a Prize system. Something like randomly chosen computer on a monthly basis that has at least 1 hour of runtime or something like that. You could give away computers because that perpetuates it self.

I mean I'll be crunching data with or without it, but it makes a bit more fun and I think that this could increase the number of people that would participate.

Re: Prizes !!!

I personally run all of my machines on the grid because it just might lead to a cure for a disease that someone in my family might get 10 years from now.

For others, teams, points and that sort of thing offer bragging rights. Take a look at the top teams and see what is motivating them.

Re: Prizes !!!

Yes, Victors u are right, thats the same reason i cruch for free is to find cures for deases, or atleast help. And alot of people have no need for prizes!

==>BUT<==, everyone is different, and different people are motivated by different things. and if getting prizes to people incourages/motivates people to crunch more; hense, speeding up our work which will speed up drug discover/production/CuReS.

Then i say it should seriously be considered and not just disregareded so quickly!!!

NOTE:Almost every company in the world uses incentives(money,
recognition, bonus' and yes, prizes) to motivate employee's to
produce more, find ways to do things better or give better
services. And they do this for one reason, and one reason only,
becuase it works!
And as far as i'm concerned, and i think alot of sick people will
agree on this point. Its not how we get to the drug/cure, but that
we get there A.S.A.P...and if that takes prizes to incourage more
participation, then so be it.

Re: Prizes !!!

Who would donate the prizes? IBM? The researchers? Drug companies who exploit the research?

I can think of problems with all these options. Which is a pity, but hardly unexpected. If there were money in reseach, researchers would get paid more.

Re: Prizes !!!

The prize I would like is knowing that I helped to find a new effective treatment or cure for AIDS. Could there be any better prize than that?

Re: Prizes !!!

it would be the same way as any compony sponsers a not-for-profit group, they provide prizes/money/time just to have their name publasized...any company would love to give away a few products just to have their logo displayed on WCG for a few days.

Re: Prizes !!!

Easynews provides Usenet access. It also acts as a partner, providing additional access to customers who donate computer time to the World Community Grid. It is a sort of prize.

Re: Prizes !!!

Thanx Darko, my thoughts exactly.

When I said prizes, I didn't mean like I want something more out of this than I really should, cause it would be really inappropriate at a place like this to think something like that. It was a suggestion that I think is worth discussing it.

Re: Prizes !!!

Ron Burgandy( love the nickname)

i agree with u alot...so much that i posted something about prizes half-a-year ago. Only to have it shot down right off the bat.

back then i was like whatever, but i couldnt' let them shoot down the same idea again without a good argument...and honestly i think i made an awesome argument this time around replaying to ur post...

i have a feeling that their opposition to ur post has to do with pure idiology about volinterism and this project. Mean while i'm only concerned with getting the results out As Soon As Possible.

Darko S

P.S. lets find a cure

Re: Prizes !!!

I don't think is pure ideology. It is simply a well known fact that prizes which has to do with money or goods, and sometimes only fame, triggers processes that - in the specific case and in the long run - might make WCG open to exploitation and controversy and, ultimately, increase the initiative vulnerability, instead of widen and improving it. With international projects like this one, that virtually involves every country and individual despite the different political, cultural and religious state, and so many different institutions, it is absolutely important to avoid the above mentioned consequences. So if prizes are to be given then they must be extremely carefully chosen; personally I believe that the existing points rating systems and the possibility of setting up teams is a very good starting prototipe.

Good day to you all.
