Hi all!
----------------------------------------My agent will not run with the XP screensaver (mode) on my desktop, only with the WCG screensaver activated. Any suggestions as of how to fix this ? XP Pro SP2, 2,4Ghz, 1024 RAM Haavar [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Dec 5, 2005 1:48:19 PM] |

Haavar --
If you are wishing to run in screensaver mode (by selecting "Run Only as ScreenSaver" as a device option on the World Community Grid Agent). that is correct. It will only run with the WCG supplied screensaver. |

The Screensaver takes cycles away from crunching. Most of us set the screensaver to (none) and turn off the monitor.
----------------------------------------Is that discreet enough?

It is unclear to me that everyone is on the same page here. Perhaps this will help:
----------------------------------------You can turn off the "Run only as a Screen Saver" by taking the check mark out of the agent's "Device Options" (on the agent on your computer). This will allow the agent to run all the time. Then, go to your start button in XP Start>Settings>Control Panel>Display choose the Screen Saver tab and choose "Blank". That way the WCG will run all the time and the only indiscrete bit will be the WCG chevron-like-icon in the task bar (lower right of the screen). When the "Screen Saver" comes on, then it will just be a black screen. If this explanation was unnecessary or not useful, sorry. |

Interestingly, I have the exact opposite problem: I have the "Run only as a screensaver" checked, but on all three of the machines running the grid agent they frequently start executing the primary task when the screensaver is not running, bogging my machine down. Have there been any threads on why the agent seems to be ignoring the "run only as a screensaver" option? Is there some other setting that might cause the agent to ignore the checkbox?
If it doesn't stop running at inappropriate times, I'll have no choice but to uninstall the agent until it can be fixed. |

Hello akidder,
Here is another thread in which several people report that their system seems to ignore the 'Run only as a screensaver': http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=7043 I have never found out why. Could you confirm that the application is running away with 97-98% processor utilization using Task Manager? Or is there another process also running at these times with a noticeable percentage? In any case, all that I can suggest trying as a cure is uninstall - reinstall, using either the BOINC or the UD installation package. The BOINC client does not come with a screensaver, but it does allow you to choose the 'Run only when computer is not in use' option, setting a number of minutes delay before starting. If you install BOINC, better change the default to 'On multi-processor systems use at most 1 thread', otherwise it might pick up on hyperthreading and try running 2 threads, eating up your memory.
