Let partially completed tasks be 'saved' before computer is shut off

I have been unsuccessful in finding a way to be able to save WCG work and restart my computer when necessary, such as after installing software, without completely losing all the work that my computer has done on its present task. Because I've noticed that some of these tasks have involved as much as a dozen or more hours already, I am reluctant to shut down the program and find myself waiting impatiently for it to finish so that I can proceed to install software.

At one point where it was absolutely essential to shutdown (an important program stopped functioning properly), I took a chance and shutdown the WCG application mid-stream, reset my computer, and WCG started up and apparently either obtained a new task or restarted on the last one, because the progress bar reset to zero percent completed.

I've read every word of your help file and the FAQ on your website, but I can't find a way to save work and resume where it was stopped. If the pause function can accomplish that, then this should be clearly explained.

Now, I know that most of us don't install software so often that we are constantly needing to reset our computers; however, I can imagine a large number of people want to shutoff their computers when they are not using them, and this will result in a waste of much computing time. E.g., my wife is a school teacher, and there is a computer in every classroom; however, to conserve electricity, the school's policy is to require every teacher to turn off all computers at the end of each day. That's a good eight hours of computing time each day, but if the tasks haven't been completed, all of that work is just lost. A better solution would be to have a button that will save work already completed and then exit the program; when the program is restarted, it would first check to see if there are any saved tasks that it needs to resume.

Cheers.

Re: Let partially completed tasks be 'saved' before computer is shut off

The agent is supposed to save the work every so often. I have yet to "loose" any work when shutting down any of my computers. If I shut down with 27% completed, it starts back up and continues from 27% completed.

This is expected from Both Win and Linux Boinc software as well as the U.D. agent.

I'm not sure why you would be having the problem you described.

Re: Let partially completed tasks be 'saved' before computer is shut off

Bill --

The applications are designed to take checkpoints with some regularity (more frequently with Human Proteome Folding, but the programmers are working to increase the frequency on the FightingAIDS@home as well). If you let your system shut down normally (ie let the shutdown process close the World Community Grid application), it will work as SpaceCat indicated and pick up where it left off when you restart the system. If you are trying to stop the application manually, you are probably causing it to end abnormally and it will be forced to pick up a new work unit on restart.

Best regards,

Sorry for the delay in responding. Thanks for the info. Yes, I've since noticed that it does that. My electricity went off suddenly yesterday, and when it came on again a few hours later, the program resumed close to where it had been.

Cheers.
