well,
I used to hang around a music recording website where I encouraged everyone to donate their computer time to this project. the response was disheartening to say the least. Some people excuses ran from the : "I'm affraid of spam or viruses" to "I have a cure for AIDS: have sex with your wife only"! Out of hundreds people who frequent the sites only 1 bothered to support the project. You know, you gotta really wonder about human nature sometimes and where we're heading... No matter, I'm happy to do my part. mmm |

Hi
I think a lot of damage was done with the naivety shown way back when this first came into public consciousness. The early media coverage etc seems to have put a lasting point of view in the minds of some. |

Hello madmanmoon,
I think that distributed computing is going to catch on in the schools, like bake sales and band projects. It is an idea whose time will come as homes acquire powerful computers for students. In many ways, a modern home computer can beat a supercomputer from the early 1970's. They are powerful enough for real work. But a really new idea has to overcome a lot of mental inertia. mycrofth |

It's always bad to hear people complaint about something you're exited about.
----------------------------------------I am active on some other forums as well in my own country (The Netherlands). I never have had comments on the project (AIDS or whatever), but the only thing that worries a lot of people is that they are afraid of spam and virusses. That's the reason why a lot of people do not join the grid yet. Is there any kind of statement by WCG that indicated that it is very unlikely - if not impossible - to receive spam/virusses in this way? ![]() |

We use an encrypted communication link between client and server. The communication link is established by the client, never by the server. The server is secured by IBM. No security is perfect, but in practice this means that spam or viruses have to come from somewhere else.

I too meet this "difficult" when i try to "recruit" new people to the distribuited computing project...maybe the ignorance...they think that internet (and "strange" thing like this one (strange for them...))=spam/virus...

madmanmoon, you're talking to the wrong people.
Instead, convince a few system administrators who manage 10's, 100's, or 1000's of machines. Or even get a company/university to partner with the project. (to companies/universities have any $$$/PR incentive to join? that always helps.)If nearly all of IBM is running WGC, that should help administrators trust it on their managed machines. And with options like "run as screen saver" and run at scheduled times, WCG can have 0 impact on the users. I just added my 8th machine, completing my first week of membership. Once I get "run as service" or "run in pre-login" figured out, I'll have even more. Go for the big guns: admins and computer departments. |

With much cajoling and a couple of test systems I have managed to convince my senior management to allow the install of the WCG agent across the whole of our LAN - 21 PCs, 11 laptops and 3 servers
What I have found is that I need to throttle back the Agent to 50%-60% on the PCs just so that the CPU fans are not running flat-out, this is more to do with the comfort of the users than anything to do with the processors overheating. they get worried when the PC is apparently doing nothing but making a fair amount of noise. Getting the agent to run as a service on the servers is pretty straight forward, though I have had to agree the agent only processing out of office hours. The PCs are set to run screensaver mode only, but hey it's a start. Now if only I could make the agent run on all 4 of the processors in each of the servers..... |

Good job Batchoy! I'm trying to install the Agent on my work as well. I'm some kind of administrator when the real admin is not around, so I have full access to the server. It's only a small company with 9 Workstations and 1 Server. But the Agent has been running on the server full-time for a few months now. So that gives a nice and steady performance.
----------------------------------------We recently got a new machine with a 'silent' fan. On that machine the Agent is running 100% without even hearing any difference in fan-volume, so that's good! On my own machine I've got a pretty noisy fan, but well, that's not a problem for me. Hopefully I can expand the use of the Agent soon. ![]() |
