My machine is an IBM Thinkpad T40 (Model 2373-MU2). It has an ATI Radeon 7500 graphics card. Thanks for the info about shutting down Rosetta. I've been using the task manager and starting from Rosetta and then progressively killing applications that startup (UDxxx.exe and then UD.exe). I've never found that shutting it down through the system tray works.... seems to start right back up at 100% all by itself from memory. I've set it to be just a screen saver and haven't seen the problem since (so what ever happens when it is running in "screensaver" mode seems not to be affected by suspend/hiberanate in same way that happens with "normal" mode).

I have a T41 (slightly upgraded version of the T40) and do not have any issues with hibernation. I see that you are saying suspend. Can you try putting the agent back to normal running (ie not just the screensaver)
Once it has been running for a while, enter into hibernation mode. Make sure that it has fully hibernated and then start it back up again. Do you see the same problem ? If you do see the same problem, can you let us know how you are entering hibernation (Start -> Shut Down -> Hibernation, via the FnF7 key etc). If you do not see the problem, then we have an issue with suspension rather than hibernation. I would then check the setting in the control panel for power settings and see if there is anything obvious (I have the Advanced Settings on mine set to Automatic). Do use the standard Windows power options or the enhanced IBM power options ? |

I'm running the World Community Grid client software (Set to work on the FAAH project) and have installed it on 6 devices, but am unable to get 100% CPU usage on any of them. The software states it should be utilizing 100% by default - but not on my systems.
It only gets to 50% and System Idle Processes use the other 50%. I've tried using the instructions to enter in the "System Enviroment Variable" (ex. wcgrid_max_cpu set to 100 ) through the control panel, but still no luck. Is there anything else I can try ? Thanks. . . |

Hello DGMV,
Sounds like you have Intel Pentium CPUs with hyperthreading (HT). In this case Task Monitor shows 1 thread running and calls it 50% utilization since a second thread is not running. Don't worry, your computer is running as fast as it can. While you can run a second thread (which would cause Task Monitor to show 100%) you would have to hope that it was a tiny integer-only thread, because our massive scientific program has filled up your L2 cache and is running through the FPU (floating-point unit) on your CPU. Running a second big program would just cause your cache to thrash and would not speed things up. In the case of Intel hyperthreading, Task Monitor is not able to measure true throughput and misleads people. |

A more detailed description of what mycrofth said is HERE . It (HT) is in my view a good technology but combined with XP, it has caused no end of confusion on this very issue.
----------------------------------------As mycrofth says "Don't worry, your computer is running as fast as it can." Further as he implies, running a second big program would likely reduce the total throughput of your machine. Regards to all. |

Stares.... I tried the fn F12 thing for hibernation... seems to work fine. But then I let it go into suspend naturally (battery getting down) and it happened. It's pretty hard to tell when the CPU is being used to 100% for the proper purpose (low priority and you can use your machine vs normal priority and it's useless). I've been wondering if it isn't a network issue (waiting on something to happen) as I've seen the network have reconnect issues coming back from suspend (DNS changes, etc.). The 100% CPU thing might be just a smokescreen.
Anyway, I use the little Thinkpad battery meter... as configured right out of the box... nothing kinky there. |

One of the methods I have come up with to solve the issue of hibernation is, before I put my laptop into hibernation, I unplug it and let the agent go into it's Pause mode. When I turn my laptop back on, I do not plug in the power cord until it has completed it's start-up.
Hopefully this helps. Andrew McLeod FireDragon1974 |
