Re: Some MCM tasks not respecting % of CPU time

I think I might have this resolved.

Since everyone was pointed to it being client behaviour, I went to check the boinc client for any documentation. I found this issue with the CPU throttling:
https://github.com/BOINC/boinc/issues/6509
It was fixed at the end of Oct, but I was pretty out of date, so I've updated and since then - no issues, even though I've had several retries with shorter than usual deadlines. I'm just not sure why that would have only affected certain tasks.

For whatever reason, on my system even one CPU running at 100% for more than a few seconds causes the fan to go at full speed. It's 8 core / 16 thread so it's not that it doesn't have enough CPUs. Never occurred to me to question it since my old laptop was the same. Typically running 8 tasks at 25% works well for me - no fan noise.

I'm now curious about the hardware you all have that doesn't do this :) I've got an AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS processor.

Thanks all for your help :)

Re: Some MCM tasks not respecting % of CPU time

Rosemary,

One of my systems is a MinisForum miniPC with a Ryzen 7840HS on Ubuntu 24.04 -- not much space for a big cooling system in there, so I don't let it run flat out (though the fan was fairly quiet even when I tested the system just using the CPU's own power limit and thermal throttling...)

I use the AMD pstate driver in passive mode in conjunction with schedutil governor, capping the CPU frequency at 4.1GHz, which seems to keep the CPU temperature below 70C when running 8 MCM1 tasks at once most of the time.

I don't have to deal with ambient temperatures much above 28C even during a UK heatwave, but when that happens I just lower the frequency cap to around 3.8GHz and it seems to manage without getting noisy!

Of course, your other uses of the system might preclude such activity, but I treat my main workstation (a Ryzen 7900) the same way and haven't found anything where the performance is unsatisfactory as a result.

Cheers - Al.

Re: Some MCM tasks not respecting % of CPU time

Thanks Al, that's really interesting.

By default (from the factory) mine has been set up to run at 5.1GHz - that could explain why it's so eager to spin the fan when things get going! It's probably also fair to say I'm not very tolerant of fan noise.

Re: Some MCM tasks not respecting % of CPU time

Sorry for the off topic post. I use Efmer's BoincTasks and TThrottle on my Win 10 Laptop - and you can set the desired temperatures. TThrottle throttles up to 30% on my laptop. Here's the site: https://www.efmer.com - Ian
