Currently only one of my hosts is receiving work units. It's running Windows 10. So why is it reported as running Ubuntu 20.04.6 LTS in my results page on the WCG website?

Brummig,Have you installed Docker or Podman on your host? If so, this may be the cause of your problem. See this thread. Cheers, Mark |

No, neither Docker nor Podman. The command line in the WU result is "wcgrid_mcm1_map_7.61_windows_x86_64".

Hmm, that’s weird. I’m out of ideas, sorry.

Thank you for your suggestions. I went back for a deep dive through that thread you linked to, and I think it's nothing to do with Docker or Podman (neither of which I run), but WSL (which I do use, but not currently for BOINC). Looks like Windows tasks are being downloaded and run natively, but BOINC doesn't read the XML from sched_request_www.worldcommunitygrid.org.xml (for WCG) correctly. I've just checked, and I have the same problem with Einstein@Home. However, other projects report the OS correctly.

Brummig,
Thank you very much for reporting your findings ... very interesting! My problem with misreporting of the OS started when I installed BOINC 8.2.4 and Docker. In an attempt to resolve the problem, I uninstalled Docker, which made no difference. I also uninstalled and reinstalled BOINC, which also made no difference. I did not try uninstalling WSL. I did not consider WSL as a possible cause for the problem because I had been running WSL since long before installing 8.2.4 and Docker. (And also because BOINC was reporting my PC as running Alpine Linux, whereas I had installed Ubuntu to run under WSL.) But maybe it was something in 8.2.4 that did not work nicely with WSL. I had no solution to this issue, so I gave up trying to fix it. Interestingly, however, the problem has now gone away, and my tasks are correctly reported as being Windows 11. This coincided with my upgrading my PC from AM4 to AM5 (without changing SSDs), but I have no idea why that solved the problem! Cheers, Mark |

Grumpy Swede is reporting over on the BOINC forum that some of his WCG wingmen are apparently running an obscure operating system called "T". Sounds very rad.

I'm experiencing the same thing, but instead of "T", my OS type and OS version is reported as "W".
----------------------------------------Although I don't have WSL active, it's BOINC that scrapes information from wsl: <wsl> <distro> <distro_name>Ubuntu</distro_name> <os_name>W</os_name> <os_version>W</os_version> <wsl_version>2</wsl_version> <is_default/> </distro> </wsl> To me it seems to be a BOINC issue. I'm running BOINC 8.2.5 [Edit 1 times, last edit by Crystal Pellet at Nov 13, 2025 10:06:35 AM] |

I've updated the BOINC version on my Win10 machine from 8.2.5 to 8.2.8 and I've WSL active atm.
----------------------------------------My system information in BOINC's client: <os_name>Microsoft Windows 10</os_name> <os_version>Core x64 Edition, (10.00.19045.00)</os_version> <n_usable_coprocs>1</n_usable_coprocs> <wsl> <distro> <distro_name>Ubuntu</distro_name> <os_name>Ubuntu</os_name> <os_version>Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS</os_version> <wsl_version>2</wsl_version> <is_default/> <libc_version>2.39</libc_version> <docker_version>4.9.3</docker_version> <docker_type>2</docker_type> </distro> </wsl> The OS type and OS version in my results are now reported as Ubuntu and Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS: https://worldcommunitygrid.org/contribution/workunit/777281507 In the Results log: Commandline = projects/www.worldcommunitygrid.org/wcgrid_mcm1_map_7.61_windows_x86_64 -SettingsFile MCM1_0242485_1921.txt [Edit 1 times, last edit by Crystal Pellet at Nov 27, 2025 9:19:19 AM] |

Just to see what's happening with BOINC version 8.2.8, WSL disabled and rebooted the system:
