Hi All,
----------------------------------------We have deployed a new forum using the open source Discourse platform, implementing SSO so that you can sign in with your WCG accounts. We invite you to provide feedback, report issues, and generally evaluate the new platform at your leisure: https://discourse.worldcommunitygrid.org/ While the default theme is currently dark, you can change it by going to account settings after logging in: 1. Click on your avatar in the top right after logging in 2. Go to "Preferences" -> "Interface" -> "Theme" and changing the theme to Solarized or WCGA Light. We will be able to bring badges, emojis, stats, the word game/highest batch threads, and any other data/asset to Discourse, so please let us know which features you feel we should prioritize. We are migrating to the Nibi cloud before the end of August. Our intent is to review feedback about the Discourse forum and desired feature set after the migration is complete, and we can then begin to build out the Discourse site with additional content and direct attention to the new community site more broadly. If the move to Discourse is not seen as a positive direction by active users of the forums, we will of course re-evaluate. Thank You, WCG Tech Team [Edit 1 times, last edit by dylanht at Aug 14, 2025 11:04:21 PM] |

I don't see any login button nor could I find the preferences to change the way it looked. I tried to post a reply, but I don't think I succeeded. I did see Adri's post.
----------------------------------------Edit: I found the preferences area, I figured out how to post a reply and I changed the background. So far I can use it, but it does not seem intuitive to me. Cheers

The new forum should probably have sections like this forum does. I probably shouldn't have created my topic in general.
----------------------------------------I'm brushing up on my html. I haven't figured out colored text yet. How long can I edit a message? edit to add: thank you Dylan for new things and the communication! [Edit 1 times, last edit by Unixchick at Aug 15, 2025 3:27:08 AM] |

Sorry, but I have to say, that that is one of the worst forum softwares I've seen so far. Typical modern design wasting lots of space by using ridiculously large fonts and buttons and with a lot of unused space between, because some people think it has to look the same on a 24+" screen as on a smartphone. The forum software you are using now isn't great, but for sure by far better than this.
----------------------------------------If you want to invest some time and change something, do the same as GPUGRID did recently (they also had customized webpages confusing everyone, who came there from other projects): revert to standard BOINC pages. With a bit of luck, that will give us even a server status page, something that is indeed very useful for us crunchers. I will for sure not leave WCG if you switch to that new forum software, but I'd definitely prefer if you don't do it. ![]() |

Server Status page would be great! I know that's not the topic here...

Well, don't fix what isn't broken, fix instead what is...

As I posted on the discourse forum, it's a step backwards, not better. I'm active on several forums, and all those are better.
----------------------------------------Unless there's a back-end reason where a change must be made, then I'm with Ralf on this one. If it must be changed, there are better software options.

Paul,
----------------------------------------I saw your post over there, and used it as an opportunity to test posting and then editing an existing post :-) I'm not going to quote your post here, but I hope you'll bring the rest of your observations over here as I'm presuming this is where they'll be looking for feedback -- hopefully Dylan (or someone) will set me straight if I'm wrong... One thought of mine that I'll bring back from there to here is that there is no one forum software that's going to be better for everyone's tastes; different people work in different ways and have different needs and preferences... I suspect that "worse" often ends up being code for "it's not what I'm used to..." With that in mind, I'll observe that I've seen people in other environments saying (e.g.) discourse is better/worse than discord [delete as appropriate!]; other combinations show up too! My only current regular encounter with a non-BOINC-related discussion environment is OpenWeb based -- I can't be sure how many of the problems with that are related to how the host has set it up rather than the underlying software, so I'll just say it is a frustrating experience! I hope that's not on your "better" list :-) Cheers - Al. [Edit 2 times, last edit by alanb1951 at Aug 16, 2025 10:48:51 AM] |

If you want another platform for posting, why not Discord? Asteroids and GPUGrid have channels there. I'm not going to yet another platform such as Discourse, whatever that is.
What's needed is not another platform, but rather better communication with the volunteers as to the progress of new projects and addressing of problems. |
