Seems like we're back to no WU's coming out again....although, so far, there seems to still be upload of completed WU's possible.....but my forward work is starting to look a bit thinner than ideal..... What's happening at Krembil - any update from the Techs please on timing for a return to 'normal' service??? I'm getting new MCM work. Likewise the forum is hardly moving. And WUs are still not being purged and continue to pile up.... Ralf ![]() |

I don't see any of that. All 3 machines have about 2 days worth of work.
----------------------------------------There is a slight slowness on the forum but not molasses. Seems to be waiting for something. Clicked stop on the browser. I do see that certain pages hang waiting for external site data transfer. I saw one from FR ( This sig: www.wcgsig.com/728051.gif (yours) I blackholed wcgsig.com in the hosts file and this hang disappeared. [Edit 2 times, last edit by BobbyB at Aug 19, 2025 3:06:43 PM] |

Thanks to BobbyB for that bit of detective work, which explains the oddities when a forum page appears to have loaded but the browser thinks otherwise! I've often wondered which of the various sig-file suppliers was likely to be the problem but I've usually ignored it (or clicked to stop whatever wasn't loading quickly enough!)
There's also something that sometimes makes the transition between forum pages slow; I haven't bothered to try to prove this in a browser environment[*1], but I suspect it checks authorization on every page load, and there are times when that can take anything from 10 to 30 seconds, possibly longer. There are likely to be other reasons; I just offer that one as a possibility. Cheers - Al. *1 -- I know that the authorization stuff can slow up one of my API scripts that dig data out of the WCG database; sometimes it takes over 30 seconds to approve the connection, and if it's in that sort of mood each database query can take considerably longer than usual too (and yes, I accumulate elapsed time for contacts with WCG, so I can see when it's doing it!) |

I don't see any of that. All 3 machines have about 2 days worth of work. Well, I didn't change a thing and now the forum is working as normal. There is a slight slowness on the forum but not molasses. Also, the nauseating progress bars on the Overview and Results page have stopped and the page, with current data, comes up snappy. Sorry, but this is not a client side issue, this IS server side... Ralf,
The main problems with forum sluggishness are/were indeed server side, but on any page where any posts have a signature including a wcgsig.com item (such as yours and JSYKES's on this page) the browser spends extra time trying to download something that doesn't seem to be available any longer (and, sadly, may never return). That's only a minor irritant compared with the other far more drastic forum issues we see on occasion, but it happens all the time... At least it is something we can deal with client-side if we so choose :-) Cheers - Al. |

Ralf, Sorry Alan, but if that sig link is working or not is inconsequential for the problem that I reported. It maybe half a split second to skip past that link, while the sluggishness of the forum was in the order of 5-10 secs to refresh or load a page. The main problems with forum sluggishness are/were indeed server side, but on any page where any posts have a signature including a wcgsig.com item (such as yours and JSYKES's on this page) the browser spends extra time trying to download something that doesn't seem to be available any longer (and, sadly, may never return). At least it is something we can deal with client-side if we so choose :-) Cheers - Al. That is a significant difference. As mentioned, by now, forum and the other web site pages load at a normal/acceptable speed, and if there is (currently) a remaining issue, that it is that the number of WUs in the database keeps increasing, without at least getting some acknowledgement from WCG Towers about this... Sorry, Ralf, but I didn't say it was consequential. In fact, I was talking to BobbyB as much as I was talking to you, and that conversation was solely about the non-BOINC services such as the forums and authentication...
----------------------------------------I, too, am far more concerned with the many millions of excess workunit and result records currently backed up in the database, but I like to mention what I see of other things as well. Remind me not to bother in future... Cheers - Al. [Edit - typo: backed up, not back up...] [Edit 3 times, last edit by alanb1951 at Aug 20, 2025 3:06:48 PM] |

No need to take things personal, Al.I, too, am far more concerned with the many millions of excess workunit and result records currently backed up in the database, but I like to mention what I see of other things as well. Remind me not to bother in future... I just tried to point out, granted with quite some frustration, that there are bigger things awry than the sluggish forum. And given the total lack of response to those more pressing issues makes it simply more frustrating (I am pretty sure not only for me) when there are other things brought up that just distract from the more pressing issues...
